heelo. my name is jamie. i am writing to you about my boyfriend rick, who i have been with for over 3 years. ill try to make this short. 1 and 1/2 months ago, we noticed two lumps on his neck. after a couple of weeks, i got him to go to the doc. he said they were swollen lymph nodes, and did a few tests, including mono, it came back neg. they said wait 2 more weeks, and if they dont go down, come back. 2 weeks pass, and we are going to go to the doctor, but one night i noticed another lump on his other side, just below his jaw. by the next day, it was HUGE. so big it was causing him alot of pain and anxiety. so we went to the ER. they did a test for mono. it came back POSITIVE. they also did a scan of his chest and found 2 swollen lymph nodes. the doc was concerned that he didnt have any other symptoms of mono, so he did another test to be sure it was. we found out today it was NOT. so they are sending him to a surgeon to see what he wants to do. i am terrified. he has always been very healthy, and he does not have any symptoms of nhl, or hl, such as night sweats, or fever. nothing. so i have a few questions. 1) does it sound like cancer?
2) the nodes swelled up really fast, so wouldnt he display more symptoms if in fact it was a rapid cancer? 3) the node that prompted us to go to the ER went down considerably in size, wouldnt cancer just make them stay the same or get bigger? i know i am grasping at straws here, but he is everything to me, and it is breaking my heart to thin he could have cancer. i am so scared, as is he. please, everyone who reads this, ANY advice would be wonderful.... thank you.

I know you are scared but it sounds like both you and the doctor are on top of things. There is no way to know whether or not he has a cancer without a biopsy. It is true that in the early stages of some lymphomas that there are few if any symptoms, which can be a blessing of sorts. Just know that in most cases, this is now a very treatable cancer if it is one, and if not the doctors will also know how to handle whatever it is. Take care.

Jamie

Sorry to hear about this experience. It sounds like he needs a definite diagnosis, and it can only be reached by removing one of these nodes and sending to a pathologist. Still, lymphomas may present very differently; some very symptomatic, and some not at all. It sounds like he is beeing well taken care of.

best regards,
Leo

Dear Jamie, MY cousins wife just got the results back from the swollen lymphnode on the side of her neck. Non cancerous. Cancer has hit our family hard. It was wonderful to hear good news for a change. Good luck with your boyfriend, he is lucky to have you and your support.
