My mum is having her op today ....

My mum has breast cancer and she's having her operation today to get her breast removed. I'm really scared for her because I dont want to see her go through this, and I dont know what the outcome will be. I'm doing my best to not get upset when I'm talking to her on the phone...i usually do the crying once we hang up. Everyone keeps saying that's she'll be fine but I just can't be sure because this can kill her and i'm shit scared.

Hello,

Try and stay strong for her. The vast majority of patients do very well after surgery, so chances are in her favor.

Hi,

I had both breast removed. One a week after my dx and the other a year later. I had chemo and radiation as well. There is no cure for this disease, but they have come a long ways. I was high risk for recurrence because I was "young" and had 9+ lymph nodes. I will hit the 6 year mark before I see my onco again (saw him last month and I'm doing great). Yes, this disease can kill, but MANY of us are alive and living a full and happy life and I plan on living to be 90 Smile

Your fears are normal and your mom is on an emotional roller coaster from hell, but the roller coaster does slow down. I have no regrets about having both breasts removed or going through treatment. The hardest part for me was losing my hair, but once it was gone, the worst part of that was over. Then, my 1st bad hair day was awesome !!!!! The time will go by faster then you'd think. I can't believe it's been over 5 1/2 years since I heard those words, you have cancer, but it has.

I just wanted to thankyou for your reassuring words, I really need to hear them, I am on my way to see her now and I'm not really sure what to expect other than the fact that she is my mum and I love her and that will never change no matter what. I will keep updates as to how things go ok? So fingers crossed..i am praying she will survive this.

You're very welcome Amy. This is such a scary time for you and I totally understand the fears. My parents sure never expected their daughter to be dx with cancer, so they had their own emotional roller coaster. It's so hard on the family, not just the patient.

Please let us know how she's doing and how you're doing.
