| Hello, I have a question about a series of growths I've had on my head in recent weeks. I'm a mild hypochondriac and sweat every little medical issue, strange sensation, unexplanable phenomenon I find on my body, so I might be being a little compulsive, but whatever. Six weeks ago I started Accutane treatment for stubborn acne. I've been having headaches for about a year now fairly frequently but have been otherwise completely healthy. Soon after I started taking the pill, they became more pronounced & painful (as my derm said they could) Now, maybe three weeks ago i noticed what felt like an incredibly large bug bite on the side of my head above my temple, naturally freaked, but it went away after a few days. Then, about a week later, I felt a smaller one on the top of my head, freaked out, and then it went away. Now, this Friday, I started to feel a new bump, but it felt markedly different. Now, if you run your finger about two inches below the furthest protrusion of the skull in the back of your head, in line with the outside of your neck, you'll feel two noticable bones. I assume this is the bottom of your skull. Well, on me, one of them (the left) is at least twice the size as the other. The larger one is unmovable & feels like nothing less than bone. In theory, it could have always been there, without me feeling it, but I don't think so. I feel like it's probably new. Anyone with experience with Lymph Nodes, the Medulla, or just the nature of growths in general have any opinions on what the problem could be? Please help, I have a doctor's appointment on Thursday, but I'm predicting to be getting little or no sleep until then unless I can find some solace in somebody's words. Thanks & God bless. |

Dear Lenified,
Sorry I'm not an expert on Lymph Nodes or Medulla but wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you & wish you all the best for your Dr's visit this Thursday.
Please post a reply & let us know how you go.
I feel for you having this worry & pray your mind will be free of this concern after you see your Dr. I'm sure you will tell the Dr of ALL of your concerns so the Dr can make the best diagnosis for you.
My thoughts are with you at this time.
Cheers, Aussie Angie. _________________ Brother diagnosed with GBMIV Feb 07

As a Beauty Therapist I have a little more knowldge about skin Conditions and disorders than normal.
With Using Accutane you must realsie that it tends to alter your hormonal level. (hormones tend to be the biggest Anger Target towards Acne)
Accutane slows down the sebeacious Gland (Sebum- oil flow) and drys the skin out. (Alot of people have headaches due to this).
Accutane can also bring deep cystic Acne to the surface. Deep hard/ soft like nodules. (lumps- like massive blind pimples). Mostly this appears to happen on the back, neck area and face...But asumeing it can happen any where. With Acne- But especial Accutane- you MUST drink 8 glasses of water a day. And limit soft drink, coffee and tea. You must hydrate your body well.
The bones I think you are talking about are the Opcipital Bone. it is the base of your skull- and can be uneven, bumpy and also vary in side to side. (though this should be a old thing not a new development).
You must get this checked out and ask plenty of questions. Write them all down so you don't forget.

Thank you guys so much for answering. I went to my GP & she noticed I have bacterial laryngitis (I didn't even know, but would explain the mild persistent sore throat I've had lately) & diagnosed the bumbs as enlarged/infected lymph nodes which she gave me Amox-Clav for. She assured me that the antibiotics would not conflict with the Accutane. I am to take them for ten days and check back in with her if they haven't drastically reduced in size or gone away.
I feel kind of silly freaking out about it hindsight 20/20, but my father had prostate cancer & my grandfather & great grandfather on my mom's side died of lung cancer, so I'm always worried. Thank you again for taking the time to answer me & my thoughts & prayers go out to everyone on this board. |
