Hi Tammy. Sorry to hear that you have been so tired. I also took some time off this summer. It all gets to yah after a while. I am glad to hear from you. I am glad that surgery is again an option. Let us know when you have it scheduled.

Hello friends
I am wondering if anyone could kindly fill me in with any information on what to exspect with an awake surgery. Do you think they would they allow a spouce or friend to be in the room with you?. Also has anyone had difficulty with thinking speaking and dropping out of your hands? I know my doctor has explained there will be different things happen to me, I wonder when I should call about them or when is it the time to call, I dont want to bother them with the little things so I am not sure when I should. I re-read what I am writting and I am confused at a few things, maybe alittle to tired to type. There for I think I should lay down.
Please take care of yourself and keep your faith!
YTam xx

Tammy, in your reply to me, you mentioned falling and not remembering what happened. Add that to these symptoms and it becomes even more worrisome. I do have difficulty speaking, right hand and arm weakness, and balance issues (including falling) but I have had them since my surgery in 2005 and my doctor knows about these problems. If I were you, I would certainly tell my medical team... especially if they are new things or if you are getting worse.

What is the awake surgery for? I have had wake procedures before (angiogram and colonoscopy) but I did not stay awake Laughing. As for having a friend or husband in the room with you, that is very unlikely for a number of reasons including keeping to room sterile and the possibility of that guest distracting the medical team or causing them a problem if something should go wrong.

When do you have this procedure?

Hi Tammy,

My husband was awake for his surgery. They first knocked him completely out got him all set up in the operating room. The surgeon opened his head up to expose the area for surgery and then they woke him up.....His head was secure so he couldn't move it and couldn't see anything upsetting. The surgeon had him talking and answering questions like his name and counting to 10...when they got real close to his verbal center he started having a hard time with those types of functions.....so the surgeon knew where his margins where for the verbal center of his brain.....He repeated this for the motor strip....asking him to lift his right leg (right leg since his surgery was on the left side of the brain) and also his arm.....When he started getting super slow at this they knew they had reached his motor plate margins. There were times during the surgery when he started getting really anxious...feeling like thrashing around or intense butterflys like you need to run and get out of there....He just told the anesthesiologist and within seconds he felt calm again......they have all the good drugs.... Anyway my hubby was unable to move his right side following the surgery due to his brain being abused and some mild swelling but he got everything back and is operating at 100%. He runs every day for 3-5 miles and works at a very demanding job (mental cognition etc)

I hope this helps. Please make sure to ask lots of questions and if you don't understand the answers then tell the docs to explain it again. Going through all of this is hard enough...you shouldn't leave the docs with questions.....they should all be answered. make them aswer them to your liking.

God Bless
Alisa

Good Morning everyone Smile
First of all Thank you Jim for your side of things Smile I always look forward to your advice.....and Thank you to soxfan for sharing your story with me, it does help knowing more about it and knowing more people going through it.
It has been a long time since I have been on the site. For a update on me, I came very close in loosing my finger. My coordination is becoming worse than it was, I was trying to split some little pieces of wood to make a fire and hit my hand with the axe. Doctor said it was my ring that saved my finger. I received 9 stitches. Same day I cut my self with a utility knife on my upper thigh. My doctor wants me to stay away from objects because my coordination is worsening Sad . I now have more detachments' among other things. I don't think I will be putting my sugary off for a long time. I know people have went though it and was ok, I know I will be ok, I hope I will. It is so easy to give the strengthen words to others but so hard to give them to myself. Crazy road I have to go down but there must be some reason. Good Luck to everyone and Thank you for sharing your thoughts and advice, I do look forward to reading it when I do come on here...

Looking for my silver lining in the cloud...I will soon find it, I know I will...I am promising myself.

Take care
Tammy Confused

Hi Tammy!!! It is great to hear from you Smile Indeed, it has been a long time. I am sorry that you are having coordination problems. I had to go to PT and OT following my surgery and radiation in 2006. It help me a little getting back my coordination. I still have some dexterity issues and strength issues.

You are not alone on this "crazy road." Keep in touch.
