my dad 86 has had prostate cancer for about 5 years which has spread to the bone ( scan last April )
he now has severe anemia, which i assumed was common, but noone else seems to mention it on this message board.
the medical team have suggested that he will get more and more sleepy and will not have the enegy to get out of bed in the end. he is presently on a low dose of steriods.
they have indicated a time scale of about 1 year.... i just wondered if anyone else had experiance with anemia being a major problem? thankfully my dad is in a very nice care home receiving the best care.
thanks

Hi judewri, I am very sorry about your father's cancer and anemia. Just because we do not mention anemia too often does not mean that it is a rarity. On the contrary. It has been my experience that it is a very common complication... so common in fact that we just tend to take it for granted... if you have cancer you will probably have to deal with anemia at some point. This is especially true if the bones are involved since that is where blood cells are produced. Chemotherapy can also have a big effect on blood counts.

There is a very expensive medication called Procrit that is used with success to treat anemia. Last time I heard, it cost US$300+ for one dose. My father, my mother, and I had to take it at some point. For me, the chemotherapy caused me to be permanently borderline anemic.

You father is in my thoughts and prayers.
