Hi
Some years ago, I gave a blood sample in order to be a potential bone marrow donor. I was already a regular blood donor.
About two years later, I've been diagnosed has having Ulcerative Colitis(UC).
Fortunately, it wasn't a very bad case, and I've been in total remission for more than 3 years.
In 2005, when I was going to give blood, I've been told that I wasn't able no more to give blood because of my past UC episode.
At that time, I didn't became very upset, because my type of blood isn't very rare, so there was no great tragedy to the world because I couldn't give blood for the rest of my life.
However, just before this Christmas, I was contacted because I was a bone marrow donor for someone that needed it.
When I told them that I had the UC episode, thay also said that, because of that, I was no longer ellegible for donation of my bone marrow.
But this time I became very upset. I was going to be a real (no longer potential) donor for someone, and to find someone compatible is very rare.
Can anyone please tell me why I can't be a donor ? Is it for my sake ? I asked my gastrenterologist, and he told me that there wasn't any problem for me, since I was in remission for more that 3 years.
Is it for the recipient's sake ? How can the fact that I had UC three years ago jeopardize the success of the transplant ?
Thanks in advance for any clarification.
I feel mysellf very frustrated, because I was going to help someone, but now I can't, and I don't know why.
And I also can't stop thinking about the patient that was going to receive my bone marrow. Perhaps I could have saved his/her life ...
God bless you all

I'm so sorry you're unable to donate. The reason you aren't is if you've had some past issues then your cells may pose a risk to the recipient. A transplant wipes out the original immune system and anything underlying in the body can cause severe infection or death at that time.
A transplant is tricky and there is no point in going through with it if there is a high risk involved.
Often there are several possible donors found for the patient and the best one is chosen. Let's hope, that is the case.
I appreciate your involvement! _________________ "Fall seven times, stand up eight." -Japanese Proverb |
