Hi Everyone,

My husband was on 600mg Morphine per 24h in the October. By Xmas my husband had been able to reduce down to 340mg. 170 morning and evening.
29th January he had reduced down to 220mg. 110 morning and evening.
Same day he was told his NSCLC was clear on the scan and he wants to get off morphine as quick as possible.
My husband is reducing 20mg per day. 10mg morning and evening. He is now down to 60mg morning/evening.
If anyone has the knowledge of reducing this drug could you please advise whether my husband is reducing too quickly?
Also if he reduced too quickly, could he have a bad reaction later on?
Does anyone know how long Morphin stays in the body for?
Most grateful for any replies on this topic as it does'nt say much about reducing Morphine on searching the net.

Hi koikkeril. I am very sorry about your husband's cancer but happy that he is doing so well... well enough to be getting off of the morphine.

You should ask his medical team to be sure that your husband is not getting off too of the morphine too fast. However, if he is not having any pain or going through withdrawal symptoms the rate is probably OK. My mother and father had to take morphine from time to time during their illnesses and it seems to me that they got off of it within one day... but I do not remember the dosage they were taking. Morphine is not like a steroid or anti-seizure medication that your husband needs to be weaned off of over a very long time.

As for how long it remains in his body, probably it is all out in a matter of days. The half life of morphine (the time it takes for the body to get rid of half of it) is less than 6 hours.

You and your husband are in my thoughts and prayers.
