My Husband just had robotic RC 2 weeks ago. Thanks God for the internet!
We were sent home after his post op visit with the information that he had a tumor classified as T3a. The doc told us nothing about what that meant and told us to look things up on the internet. Thanks to this site I now have a dozen questions for him. We don't even know his Gleason count that I keep reading about. He was told to come back in 3 months for a PSA. Now that I know what T3a really means, I am scared for him to wait that long. It seems that we should be doing more right now. My husband is 67 and he is currenting experiencing some post op leaking. Any thoughts on what he can do to help this problem. His hospital info says it's normal but I'm still curious. He came home with a cath for 1 week.
I'm really learning and would appreciate all the help I can get.

You need to obtain a print out of the surgical lab report to have a better understanding, and know the right questions to ask.

To assist with recovery, keegals and light exercise could assist, and low dose viagra or similar helps with blood flow and the healing process.

It can take some weeks after surgery for PSA previously present in the system to clear: first PSA test could be done at about 6 weeks, by which time it should hopefully be a very low figure.

Thank you John, you are the first to reply. I will request what you suggested tomorrow. It is amazing what the doctors don't give you. What did the doctors do before internet??? Maybe they had to educate their patients, or maybe it is just our doctor. Great robotic guy but bad bed side manner. Thanks again. Hopefully you were more informed.

Some leaking is to be expected. It's still early. John suggested kegels and I agree. If things don't improve, make sure the urologist knows. There are medical interventions that can help, but hopefully your husband won't need them.

As far as T3a goes--I was the same. Don't panic. It just means you need to be vigilant--well, you were going to be vigilant anyway, right? And if his PSA comes back (like mine did) it's not necessarily a death sentence, either.

Getting that medical information, as John advised, is very important. You'll be much better armed to face the future. There are some good books out there to go along with your husband's medical history. I like Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer (2007).

Best wishes.
