I went for my first skin check last Weds. I turned 40 in January and have put this appt off for a long time Sad after having used tanning beds when I was 19 and 20 and having a severe sunburn when I was 24 (turned purple, was very sick, water blisters everywhere, then many new spots appeared). After that I had one bad sunburn but have mostly stayed out of the sun. I am very pale with blonde hair and blue eyes.
I have had a small black spot in my bikini area (had to be from the tanning bed!) for ages so I asked about it. The derm wrinkled her brow and took a sample. It looked like a felt tip marker mark, not raised at all and hadn't changed since I noticed it. I wish I could remember when I first noticed it - it is at least several yrs old. It was maybe 2 mm wide and long.
I never thought anything of it til the past year or so when I began to hear more about skin cancer and then knew someone who knew someone who had black dots on their leg that were melanoma.
I won't know my results til Tues or Weds (I also have two other non-black spots they biopsied) and don't want to get myself all worked-up, but was wondering if anyone could tell me about their experience with any black dots on their skin.
Could someone get a tiny black spot like this and it NOT be cancer? Just a real dark mole? I am nervous b/c of where it is and think it must be from the tanning bed. I understand the same thing could happen from the sun of course.
Could someone have a black spot like this for 10-20 yrs w/o seeing any ill-effects?
TIA!

Heather, I am sorry about your current health concerns. I am glad that your doctor did a biopsy of those spots. However, they are very likely to not be cancer if they have remained unchanged for so long. Yes, it is very possible so someone to have a black spot for 10-20 years. I know that I have had several that have not changed or caused any problems for 20-40 years. All the ones that my doctors have biopsied came back negative for cancer.
