Ok - so, I know everyone is different and that tis disease progressed different in all but....
to those of you who know or who has lost someone to lung cancer, I have a few questions....
This last week mom has been sleeping about 20 hous a day and it seems to be a little less each day - how long did your loved ones live when they started sleeping this much -
Also - she has developed these little purple dots on her body (mostly in stomach area and breast area - Hospice said it could be from the liver shutting down....
Anyone have that?
Our nurse will never answer my questions even when I tell her that I know she doesn't know for sure and I won't hold her to it....
Also - doesn't seem to know where she is and thinks that she is on a trip somewhere (even though she is at home).
Is quite confused about day/night and other things.....
Any input or sharing of your experience would be appreciated
I have this feeling that we are in the last week or so

Hi Caligirl

My mom slept alot most of the time and mostly because of her pain medication. I do recall her having some of those purple dots you mentioned, but I never thought to ask what they were about. I started noticing them a few months before she passed, and even more so a couple of weeks before, so she seemed to develop more over time.

Is she taking alot of pain medication? That could be causing her confusion and could definately be causing her to sleep alot.

Before my mom passed, the most pronounced thing was her shortness of breath. That is what sounded alarms for us.

Please keep us posted on your mom and best wishes to you. Be strong!

My dad never got out of bed for the first month, then he started getting up for a few hours a day, sometimes all day, then it jumped back to not being able to get up, and the last month he has been perfect, and is working on remodeling the house, but was down for a week after his last chemo. He goes for chemo again next wednesday, hopefully he is not down to long after that.

Cali,

I'm sorry to hear about this decline for your Mom. I can't remember how long she has been fighting or whether she is on treatment.

Everyone is right -- if she is on heavy pain meds, that can cause all kinds of weird thought processes and a lot of sleep.

My husband, blessedly, wasn't on any pain meds. His breathing was horrendous so he had a problem sleeping. Quite the reverse problem, he slept less and less and wasn't able to get comfortable toward the end. Extreme anxiety is another general end-stage symptom, all the more so for those with breathing problems.

Is she on hospice?

Many gentle thoughts for you and your Mom.

PBJ
