| Has anyone experience severe vertigo following their RRP? My husband has his on 6/20. He was hospitalized longer than usual due to a prolonged ileus,etc. He had his catheter removed 6/30 and on 7/3 developed vertigo that has gotten progressively worse. We ended up in the ER 7/6. CT, bloodwork, urinalysis, etc. all negative. Just wondering if the vertigo is a coincidence or if anyone else has had this experience. Thanks. |

I've never heard of vertigo associated with prostatectomy. I would consult a neurologist if it persists.

I was wondering if he has the feeling of "fullness" in his ears.
Another possibility which should always be attempted first....BVVP
In all those tests, did anyone do the Epley maneuver on him. Sometimes thats all it takes to correct the problem if it is

Now it may well have other causes. I mention the above, because in the hands of a specialist, this simple solution can sometimes solve the problem right away. Almost like magic and yet some emergency room docs may be complete unaware of it.
A ENT doc would think of it right away.
The other very real possibility is vestibular toxicity...
I have a bit of it and have to be so very careful about any antibiotics that may be used during surgery. In addition to antibiotics many analgesics can have a ototoxic effect.

Now, many docs will tell you they used only the standard drugs which are "safe".........but they are sometimes not safe for everyone.
6/20.....to 7/3 is the kind of time line it can take for the inner ear "hairs" in the semicircular canals to be affected after being dosed with certain drugs. (they're not really hairs, but thats kind of how they are described)
OK......read up on this. You may eventually want to find out which drugs were use.
But please realize, I'm giving you only a couple explanations to keep in mind as you try to solve this problem.
In many people it corrects itself.
BTW, does he have any history of occlusion of blood supply to the inner ear area? One man I know had a blockage which damaged one side of his inner ear. If you are lucky, only one side is affected and the other side takes over after some time...
So lots of areas you have to look into...... Get a Otolaryngologist doc if you have not already. Also look at Meniere's disease.
OK.......good luck. Hopefully it wills self correct. I know how bad it can be.....
Remember the time line........about 13 days after the surgery. Ototoxic reactions don't happen right away. Mine when traveling, happened about a week or so after my exposure to the drugs. Kind of like a if a tree or plant gets exposed to a weed killer, it doesn't die right away, but in a few days the results can be seen..... If the little "hairs" in the inner ear get exposed, the can operate normally but eventually be damaged which shows up many days later. Only a guess as I said before. Its just that something similar happened to me almost 30 years ago.
