I want you to know that from my experience some things are actually better after having your prostate removed. No more prostatitis, no more difficultly urinating, no more BPH and the medications for it, no more biopsies, no more Prostate Specific Anxiety, no more mess during sex from semen. Your wife might think you are an even better sex partner because you most likely will take longer to reach orgasm, there won't be any mess to clean off afterward, and no need for a condom for birth control. I also found that after doing Kegal exercises for months that I am able to delay orgasm by contracting the pelvic floor muscles when I feel and orgasm coming, extending our sexual experiences. Many years ago in my youth I read about men that could indefinitely delay orgasm by doing something like Kegal contractions but it didn't work when I tried it. Now I know I should have practiced the exercises to develop the ability. Oh the pleasure that could have been achieved had I known about Kegals as a young man. So look at the bright side. Some things about your life might actually get better after surgery.

I hope no one was offended by any of my comments. I tried to avoid offensive terms and descriptions while telling you some positive stuff that I thought might cheer you up.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

markinphoenix,

Glad to hear you are doing well. I'd like to hear more about your experience with prostate cancer and type of treatment(s) you had.

I am seriously thinking of having my Prostate removed as a prophylactic
measure.

I'm sick of this prostate cancer scare crap and am ready to get over it.
Problem is, most Udocs do not want to do it until they have diagnosed me.

I'd like to have my Prostate removed in the most effective and least
damaging method.

Hello Chrisz,

Your reply surprised me. I hadn't thought there might be people that might want to have their prostate removed as a preventative step. That's a pretty serious step to take considering the risks of surgery, the potential costs, the pain and discomfort of recovery, and the potential side effects. I would urge you to read all you can on this site and elsewhere about prostate removal so you will understand the risks and rewards.

A brief summary of my experience can be read in this forum. Look for the subject line "Hard And Dry After Prostate Removal". You can see my other posts by looking at the "author" column on the list of posts and find the posts authored by "markinphoenix".

You might also post your own subject explaining your situation in detail and asking people specific questions and for recommendations. There are some very knowledgeable people regularly reading these posts that may be able to provide you some very helpful information.

I don't yet know the specifics of your situation, but I don't think I would have my prostate removed because of the threat of prostate cancer. I know living with prostate problems, digital rectal exams, biopsies, and treatments and medications can be difficult, but prostate cancer surgery and the recovery is difficult too. A thorough examination of the risks and rewards would be wise.

I'll be happy to answer any other questions you have. Please let us know the specifics of your situation. Your situation and the replies will help other readers too.

Good luck.

Chrisz,

I will share what is just one PCa survivor's opinion. I had 3 biopsies for a total of about 38 needles before 2 needles hit PCa.

I empathize with your feelings but I do not think there is a single Uro in the U.S. or most any other country that would consider doing a prophylactic removal of the prostate. In the off chance you did find one, no insurance company would pay for it.

Price a surgeon, anesthesiologist, hospital use of robotic surgery, etc. you would have enough to buy a summer home.

Time = options in the event cancer does develop. Surgical techniques are refined. Cancer treatment evolves and new ones are developed.

If I thought I was possibly developing PCa or harboring cancer that was so restricted it could not be found, I would go on an intense dietary program and a moderate exercise program to give my body every advantage. I would consider every year I delayed PCa to be a year to my advantage.

I would consider getting an MRI spectroscope with a rectal coil to see if they can more clearly see a suspicious area to focus the biopsy on. These are not done an most hospitals but I do know that MSKCC use them for presurgery planning.

Hawk and Markinphoenix,

I've not had nearly as much trouble as many on this site has concerning
either the diagnosis of PCa or treatment of PCa. And I don't want to have
those misery's bestows ted on me.

Since 2004 my PSA went from 2 to 8 and back to 2.5. I've had 2 biopsy's. One 12 core one 28 core (under sedation). I have BPH and
some erectile issues are starting to evolve. Also I have less desire for sex. My PSA is not 4.1 (going back up).

I just don't want to go through the Hell that I see many of us go through
to finally diagnose PCa. I don't want to find it on the 9th Biopsy, when,
as one member reported that his intestine had grown to the Prostate.

I think multiple biopsy's can aggravate whatever little PCa you MAY have.
Or even cause PCa to develop. Plus, pushing cancer cells through the
Prostate out into the body, is something I believe can happen.
I don't know of any other type of cancer that is so hard to diagnose.

Some quotes :

"some things are actually better after having your prostate removed. No more prostatitis, no more difficultly urinating, no more BPH and the medications for it, no more mess during sex from semen." And I might
add NO MORE BIOPSY'S, NO MORE PROSTATE CANCER ANXIETY.

"I empathize with your feelings but I do not think there is a single Uro in the U.S. or most any other country that would consider doing a prophylactic removal of the prostate. In the off chance you did find one, no insurance company would pay for it." This is the dilemma, your right.
But doctors remove Breasts and Uterus and Ovaries, prophylactically.

I'm ready to get it done, and get on with my life, never having to worry
about getting Prostate Cancer.

I'm gonna ask my Udoc on my next vist.

I think I understand your position. I would be interested in hearing if you do arrange for prostate removal. I urge you not to get the work done by just any urologist that is willing to do it. Find one that has data to prove his methods will give you a good chance for total urinary continence. Living with incontinence for the rest of your life may be worse that where you are right now. Dr. Ash Tewari is an example of what you should be looking for in a doctor, methods, and documentation of results. His web site is at this url.

Best wishes for a good outcome.
