Hi Dr Leo, et. al,
Some history: ( dx 4/03, stage iv NSCLC, extensive mets to bones, lung tumor has shrunken and is now non-measurable; chemo taxotere, carboplatin + zometa; brain mets 4/05 w/25 wbr treatments).
My dad is nearing the end of whole brain radiation for multiple brain mets. The steroids seem to have reaked havoc on his diabetes. Some days his blood pressure is very low (100 or less). So he is taking additional diabetes meds, he is off his blood pressure meds, he is being weaned off his streiods. Thursday (May 12) will be his last WBRT.
Latest problem is weakness in his legs. (Also arms and hands) He has fallen, collapsed several times. Most recently outside, in the rain, with no one at home. Oh dear. He has a walker, but doesn't think he needs it all the time. He does. We are wondering if his cognitive function is also leading him to have bad judgement?? (Such as going outside in the rain without his walker)
I am wondering if the leg weakness is from the mets in his brain, or from the radiation treatments. Or both? Is it too soon for radiation necrosis?
His other problem is his voice. It has gotten weak and hoarse. No one has any thoughts on this. I am wondering about xerostomia?? He also had a tooth fall out last week... root and all intact!! Any thoughts on this?
Ok, enough questions. I'll stop playing doctor, now Just looking for some ground in understanding what's happening to him.
TIA!
