Hi
My father was diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer (Stage IV,mets to lungs and bone) one month ago.He is undergoing chemotherapy which includes Avastin and Oxaliplastin.
He used to take daily 2-3 pegs before dinner. He stopped taking drinks after the treatment has started.
Please let me know whether he can take drinks during treatment, as alcohol for him is a major stress reliever.
Also please let me know whether there is any adverse effect if he takes alcohol during chemotherapy.

Hi - the general advice is to avoid alcohol. If he must drink it, then keep it to a minimum. One peg rather than three.

Very often the chemo affects the way in which food and drink tastes, and alcohol is one of the things that is adversely affected, so it is possible that he will not actually enjoy drinking.

Alcohol of course is not in fact a stress reliever, but a depressant.

Hi jibishk, I am very sorry about your father's cancer. I am not sure about his chemotherapy schedule; schedules vary so much from one person to another. But if he does not take chemo every day, he might want to stay away from alcohol completely on the days when he IS have chemo and using in moderation on days when he IS NOT. If he is sick from the chemo, he may not even want to drink. And as Vee said, chemotherapy can change the taste of things.

I stopped completely, for life. Considering the stress one's liver goes through eliminating the chemotherapy drugs, I decided that my liver needs the break. Actually that goes for a lot of things-I'm real careful what I put down the gullet these days. It was easy for me - I realize for other people it may not be. Just my two cents.
Aloha,

My ex has been on Chemotherapy for two+ years now and has had a range of chemo drugs. During that time sometimes he didn't like the taste of a shot of his favourite Whiskey or one glass of wine and sometimes he enjoyed it. The palliative care doctor and Oncologist said one ot two drinks would be good for him as it would stimulate his appetite. Liquor probably won't relieve his stress but if it is something that he enjoys why not have one.
Anyway that has been the view of the Oncologist and must say I agree. As the illness progresses my ex didn't want alcohol anymore but he had the choice and he didn't feel anyone was denying him anything.

Anyway just my tupence worth

I didn't drink at all during my chemo. I figured a had enough drugs in my body and didn't need to add to the mix. Plus I wanted to stay as healthy as I could.

I would advise against it.
