hi everyone
I have fair hair blue eyes and a lot of freckles,about a month ago i found a spot on the top of my arm whilst putting moisturiser on,i didnt think anything of it but a month on and it hasnt gone and feels differnt than any other spot i have...i noticed a few weeks ago that when you moved the surrounding skin it moved with it,also squeezing the skin i can feel a hardness under the spot...
After going to my hairdresses the other day we had been disscusing skin cancer and she showed me a spot that she'd had checked out the day before that the doctor was going to remove,when i got home i thought about what she had said and didnt think that skin cancer could come as a spot.
Now tonight after feeling it again and knowing my that i am in a high risk and also using the sunbeds 2x a week im worried.
I also have a raised freckle on my neck that im now worried about....
Has anyone had any of the same symptoms as me and if so what happened....

Dear worried,
An atypical nevus as you probably know by now is a mole that has irregular edges, coloring and is larger than the top of a pencil eraser. When seen, a good dermatologist will remove it. If any abnormal cells remain he/she may recommend doing a wider excision.
The earlier an abnormal mole is removed the better the prognosis. I have had several atypical moles removed. When in doubt I feel the better it is to have it removed. There is an association with atypical nevi and melanoma. What I have read there is a chance that the nevi can become a melanoma. When is not known. What I do know though is the thinner the melanoma the better the prognosis. If this is the only one that you have I wouldn't worry too much. I would however, be vigilant having early skin screenings and do self skin checks. Rmember sun screen!! I hope everything turned out all right for you. |

I would have it checked out. As the previous post says, when anything atypical is caught early, the prognosis is better. I had a melanoma on my hip and had it removed. It was stage 0-melanoma in-situ. I caught it early because it was still contained in the upper layer of skin and had not spread. It's 100% curable when caught early. If not, melanoma is an aggressive cancer and spreads quickly. Just have it checked out to put your mind at ease. I recommend against tanning beds also, especially if you are fair-skinned. Despite what the majority of society says, fair-skin is beautiful!
