My husband was discharged from work and applied for UI. He has rectal cancer and had a surgery in March 2009. His doctor said he qualifies for SDI (California state disability insurance). Is it possible to switch from UI to SDI, and then go back to UI when his disability ends?
Thanks. |

Brainman, thanks a lot for your reply. I know that he does qualify for SDI, but initially he applied for UI and I am wondering if it is possible to switch from UI to SDI and then go back on UI when his disability ends. Because if he does not find a job while on SDI, he would need some more time to look for one, and it would be nice if he could get unemployment insurance. So far our doctor offers 6 weeks of disability.
I doubt that my husband qualifies for Medicare. He was fired in February 2009, just 2 weeks before his surgery, and we had to go with COBRA in order not to postpone the surgery. He had a partial removal of colon and of a small liver leision, and now has temporary ileostomy.
I did not have enough time to look into all the options available, but I checked that if we switch to the health plan offered through my employer, his surgery won't be covered, since his hospital and his surgeon are out of the network. So we are paying 1000 dollars a month for health insurance. |
