just a quick question. i am due to have a operation on march 11 for brain tumor reccurence. i just want to know how many weeks / months after surgery does someone start with radiation. anyone have any estimate or idea how far away dcvax or novacures electrodes device or cd-110 will be available commercially. i am currently in australia. will they accept international patients for clinical trials in another country, say US

simon77, I started my radiation a little over a month after my surgery. But it really depends on how quickly you recover.

Good luck. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Simon,

Not sure how much help I can be here but I have spoken with two of the companies you ask about.

DCVax is still in Phase II trials and as far as I know is still recruiting http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00045968?term=dcvax&rank=2. My wife was not a candidate as her tumour is not operable (at least not given the risks at this point).

NovoTTF is also still recruiting but in Phase III trials http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00379470?term=novottf&rank=2&show_desc=Y#desc. When I spoke with them they were still less than two thirds of the way to a full trial and very helpful. They were happy with out of country patients with a couple caveats. Since it was a randomized study, if you were selected to be in the best standard of care group, then as long as the treatment you got at home was equivalent, you could be treated at home. If it wasn't, then you needed to be able to relocate to a trial area for the duration. If you were selected for the NovoTTF device, you needed to be close enough to have the electrodes replaced every few days. In practical terms, unless there was a technician living near you, then you needed to be at a trial location (there were a number in the States and Europe). The one in Boston that we spoke with had an arrangement for reduced rate accommodation but you'd, in effect, need to move there.

Novo was expecting to be complete in 2009 but, as I said, they were having trouble filling the total number of patients and DCVax wasn't expecting to finish until 2011, but they then needed to move to Phase III trials before the possibility of standard of care treatment.

I would suspect that neither are near the point of being a realistic treatment option unless you are willing to take part in the trial. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Kel
