I would like to contact non-smoking person that had a lung cancer caused by second hand smoking, or has similar experience. I’m a delegate from Croatia and I’m going to take part in debate at European Youth Parliament summit in Belgium at 17th of July (2009.). My committee is going to discuss Environment, Public Health and Food Safety issues. I would like to talk about the second hand smoking issue from the first hand so I can properly suggest the resolution concerning the Smoking bans and the strategies the European Union should adopt.
Usually we gather around as the most of the politicians and discuss the issues we haven’t really had a direct contact whit, so I hope this time some of you ‘’out there’’ would be interested to give me a real testimonial and help me understand the complexity of the problem (social aspect , cultural aspect and personal aspect after all). Thank you all in advance.

Although the U.S. CDC and the American Cancer Society list about 3-4000 lung cancer deaths per year from second hand smoke, I've never figured out how they quantify this number. There are so many variables involved that pinning lung cancer on one item i.e. second-hand smoke, seems ridiculous to me. It's undoubtedly a factor for some, but there are environmental and genetic issues too.
Good luck. If you can figure this mystery out, more power to you.
Most states in the U.S. have no smoking laws in public places and, if outdoors, you cannot smoke within a range of 15 -25 feet of the entrance. Some bars still allow smoking based on the percentage of alcohol sales vs. food sales, but a lot of major cities are completely smoke free in any establishment. Most schools and college campuses completely prohibit tobacco use as do sports arenas.
Florida was one of the first smoke free states, I believe. It was an economic disaster and many restaurants closed.
I'm not advocating smoking indoors by any means with my comments, just reflecting on realities with these laws.

Thank you very, very, much for your reply, I found it very helpful. I was having some second thoughts about second hand smoking being the main cause of lung cancer. I don't like making conclusions based on some study with no names. I don't need tragic testimonials I need peoples opinions and advices from someone objective. _________________ NTB |

Hi. I just wanted to add one thing. Every drug that is to be sold in the US, including every lung cancer drug, has to be run through many tests involving thousands of people. Naturally, these tests control for all the relevant variables they can think of -- age, sex, ethnicity, etc. For the lung cancer drugs, there are three categories pertaining to smoking: smokers, former smokers, and never-smokers. Not one such test has EVER made a category 'exposed to second-hand smoke'. That tells me that even the scientists don't take second-hand smoke seriously, at least not when it really matters.
You might want to check out www.forces.org for some excellent reviews of the relevant literature.

I have always been a non-smoker (tobacco), I grew up with my dad smoking for several years in the house, my work put me in places around smokers all the time, however my work put me in contact with a lot of bad things including asbestos. My dad is 88 and has stopped smoking over 10 years ago and has never had cancer and was diagnosed a year and a half ago with lung cancer, from what I believe was asbestos related.
