Hi Shazzie,
Glad to hear that your hubby had his bronchoscopy.
I sometimes hate the fact that I have had to educate myself in oncology because sometimes ignorance is bliss.
The fatty hilum is part of the lymph node. It all depends on the context in which the fatty hilum was used in the report. Was there a loss of fatty hilum or were they just describing the anatomy of the node? I have read but of course I am not a doctor, that loss of the normal fatty hilum in a lymph node suggests malignant involvement. I hope that isn't the case.
Maybe there is further explanation of these words from your specialist.
Wishing you a speedy diagnosis,
Charlene

Hi charlene,
it said on the report that there was also smaller mediastinal nodes with preserved fatty hila meauring up to 6mm
it also says there was hilar nodes noted on the right measuring 1.1cm it doesn't say how many or that those ones are fatty
he also has a larger mass on the middle of the right lung,
it says that the diagnosis is of neoplastic change,
i'm counting down the days until friday, i just want answers

Hi Shazzie,
I can feel your distress in your writing. I have been there and know how you feel, totally helpless. It's probably the first time that things in our lives are in the hands of others and it seems like it is in slow motion.
The report kind of contradicts itself but I have found that radiologists and pathologists love to be "wordy". The presence of fatty hilum is supposedly a good thing or at least tells you that cancer hasn't invaded to cause it's absence. The mass of course is not a good thing but if you look up what neoplastic means it can be either a benign or malignant tumor.
My husband's tumor was also found in his right middle lobe. The lobe in fact had collapsed onto the tumor making the diagnosis from xray and cat scan a little confusing.
After hearing all this you would think not much can be done but the doctors did remove my husband's entire lung aiming towards a cure. So keep that in your mind, surgery may be curative in your husband's case. As much as going through test after test tires everyone, be sure that they look everywhere in your husband before they do any surgery. My husband's doctors missed the fact that my husband had renal cell carcinoma going on at the same time as the lung cancer. Best wishes for a good report.
Breathe deeply,
Charlene
