Hello,

Can anyone cite some easy straightforward sources (books, etc.) on diet and alternative therapies that show some promise? Or even things to ask our oncologist about?

Oh, and while I'm at it, a good solid book on prostate cancer (we're at stage 4)?

Thanks,
T.

Hi,

If you visit your local bookstore or local library, there are oodles of books about Cancer and Diet.

You could also google 'diet and cancer' to find information on the web.

Most of the diets are very low fat, use only Virgin Olive Oil and only small amounts of proteins.

Some people go macro-biotic but it's very stringent.

The only thing that I *know* has been studied and works, is pomegranate juice. 8oz per day.

There was a small but significant study that showed pomegranate juice slowed aggressive/far-gone Prostate cancer in *some* patients.

As for alternative therapies, there is a section of this forum that has many posts on this subject.

I don't know of any that *cure*, there are many claims out there, sick people sometimes become desperate and will pay many dollars for hope.

As a volunteer at my local Gildas' Club, I do know that clients benefit from relaxation, exercise groups, art therapy, funny movies etc.

If you have a Glidas' Club nearby, you might want to give them a call.

They also have support services for clients and families.

Best wishes, as always,

Jean

These books (see bottom of message) are from the sticky post at the top of this forum "Prostate Cancer Basics". I really like Walsh, however his book focuses more upon earlier stage prostate cancer. I have looked at Strum's book. I believe Strum's book and Myers' focus more on advanced prostate cancer. The list is by no means comprehensive.

There are a lot of cookbooks out there about fighting cancer, and several about prostate cancer. I haven't tried any of them, but I would imagine they have a lot in common: avoid or limit red meat and dairy, include soy, include sources of omega-3, include lots of fruits and veggies (especially pomegranate and tomato products), avoid saturated fats, etc. Mainly common sense stuff.

There is also a new discussion forum on this site, about complementary therapies. That might be a good place to cross-post your note: http://cancerforums.net/viewforum.php?f=26 It's not specific to any particular cancer, though.

Books

Lange, Paul H., and Christine Adamec. Prostate Cancer for Dummies.

Myers, Charles "Snuffy". Beating Prostate Cancer: Hormonal Therapy and Diet.

Scardino, Peter. Dr. Peter Scardino's Prostate Book: The Complete Guide to Overcoming Prostate Cancer, Prostatitis and BPH .

Strum, Stephen, and Donna Pogliano. A Primer on Prostate Cancer: The Empowered Patient's Guide.

Walsh, Patrick C., and Janet Farrar Worthington. Dr. Patrick Walsh's Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer. 2nd edition.

Hope that helps.

There are two books I highly recommend, initiated by complimentary medicine practices. These practices are not easy to find, and I do not get a lot of support from my regular team for what they are suggesting. I do quite a bit, changed my diet profoundly, get exercise, reduce stress. Very much what Replicant has said. In general diets that are good for heart patients and diabetics are meant to be good for PCa.

I also see a lot of recommendation to limit copper, and supplements that encourage blood vessel creation/growth.

Life over cancer Keith Block
Integrative Oncology Donald Abrams and Andrew Weil

There is quite a bit you can do that will not hurt one and may well help one.

'Anticancer - a new way of life' by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber. Check it out on the Internet. This is not specific to PCa, but has been recommended to me by a couple of people as being helpful, interesting and readable. I only received my copy two days ago, so can't yet comment personally. I purchased from Amazon at £11.08 inc P&P.

here is what i translated form some website,a little advice on diet, hope it can help you

The researchers recommended that people eat more yellow, orange and red fruits, such as tomatoes, watermelon and citrus, and red pepper, pumpkin and so on. The lycopene in tomatoes can prevent, destroy the oxidation reaction within the prostate ,which is more effective than carotenoid antioxidants.
