Hi all,

I'm a 50yo ex smoker and I was tested 5 months ago for vascular problems in my right leg. One thing led to another and the Doc tested my carotids. Carotids ok but the MRA showed just the very top of my lungs and it appeared to be a small spot in the top of my right lung. I then failed a stress test and underwent open heart surgery but before I did the Doc told me that when my heart issues were finished we would revisit the apparent spot.

We did this last week with a CT Scan and the scan confirmed there's one pea size spot in the upper top of my right lung. The Doc told me it's not necessarily cancer, but because I was a smoker, we have to find out. I'm scheduled for a Pet Scan in the morning.

I asked him if it could be a spot from childhood pneumonia and he said "possible". I asked it was possible it's just a spot from smoking or something else and he said "possible". I asked him the percentages of it being cancer and he said "tough call, 50/50. He went on to explain open biopsies in his opinion would be more advantageous than needle biops IF the spot "lights up" and we need to go further.

Needless to say my wife and I are frazzled. Can someone, anyone render an opinion based on this information? What do you think? Is it going to light up? I have zero symptoms of anything at this point, mowed the lawn over the weekend, no problems except some mild soreness still from the sternum, and all that mowing Very Happy

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

It sound to me like you're getting very good medical care so I wouldn't fret it. Get in some golf and take you wife to dinner and a movie. Then come down to Pinehurst to visit me and take me out for golf, dinner and a movie.

But don't expect a kiss afterwards, I don't go that way.

Dear Tom,

Like your physician said, it is impossible to know what it is. So you will likely need some kind of biopsy to figure this out. As Max mentioned, you seem to be getting excellent care.

best regards,
Leo
