My mom is 67 and was just diagnosed with Stage IV non-operative small cell lung cancer. They believe the cancer started in the upperleft lung spread to the center of the lung, to the lymph nodes, adreanal glands, to her spine (L-1) and into her brain. Both sides of her brain are effected. She will be starting radiation on her back and brain on Monday.

We were told at her first oncologist visit that she had less than a year, but now that it is in the brain, the doctor says that time frame has changed drastically. My mom looks good other than her terrible back ache that she constantly has. She is on morphine patches and takes percaset (sp?) for her back pain. She has also lost 30 lbs. This has all happened so fast and I find myself at 31 years old trying to give my mom and dad hope and strength among all the crappy news this this disease throws our way. I have tried to research this disease in Stage IV and find little information. Its almost like Stage IV is too far gone for anything other than protocal. Can anyone lend some insite? Thank you!

Sorry to hear about your mother. Treatment at this stage usually means for palliative care and hospice care should be considered.

I am sorry to hear about your mother. I just went through this with my sister. Only difference being she chose no chemo or radiation. She had probably been infected since last October. She was not diagnosed until 4/27/05. Hospice was called in. The lung was inoperable and there were mets on the brain, lymph nodes, liver and breast. Mostly throughout body. I did loose my sister on 6/11/05 to this terrible disease. Will keep your family in my prayers.
