Would appreciate any pragmatic comments that may aid understanding... a woman (*not* me) who is in her 70s, postmenopausal and obese (otherwise thought generally healthy) has been found by her physician to have a baseball sized mass on or near one of her ovaries. She's had a CAT scan and is awaiting an ultrasound shortly. The reason she was examined was that she was having urinary and intestinal area discomfort (lower abdominal soreness, some intestinal difficulties, frequent urination) for, I'd say, some number of weeks.
The physician has said he does not believe the mass to be a cyst.

*So* - as an interested party I'm wondering what anyone can tell me about the potential diagnoses and any general guidelines as to statistical likelihood of this or that, in a patient of her age with her presentation? She does not have any known family history of cancer of any kind. She has not had any female organs removed (had a D&C once many many years ago for something medical, not pregnancy related). She never had children and is not known to have ever been pregnant.

We expect to know more from her physicians shortly but would really like to learn a bit more about the possibilities, to be best prepared to discuss the situation with them. (Her regular doc, who did an exam the week before Thanksgiving and then referred her to go get a CAT scan and ultrasound right away, has referred her to go see a gynecologic surgeon this coming week after Thanksgiving but says if for any reason that's not possible she should come back to the regular doctor by Friday.)
