Please help!!
My mother has been diagnosed with HCC. Her tumor is to large to do surgery and the doctors just informed us that they can not do surgery. I asked why and she said because of U.S. regulations. She said going out of the country would not be out of the question but wouldn't give me any more information. We are willing to go anywhere. Does anyone know of places out of the country that do liver transplants for cancer patients. My mother is 47 and healthy, I think she would be a good candidate for a liver transplant.
Thanks |

Hello Jasmine,
I am so sorry to hear about your mothers condition. My husband has just returned from Shanghai on the 4th of April 2006 after having a liver transplant.. here is our Blog page that we set up While we were there. Hopefully you can get a feel of the treatment we received. My husband an I don't regret for a minute the decision we made.
My husband was on the transplant list until they found 9 more tumors in his liver and he too was removed from the list because he was no longer considered a successful candidate for a transplant.
If you have any questions or would like to talk to my husband of myself feel free for email me and we can provide our phone number to you and your mother. _________________ Thank you

Hi MarriedBlnde,
I have read a lot about u today online. Your husband's info is all there on sfgate.com, forbes.com, your blog and these forums. I wish & pray your husband a healthy life ahead.
My aunt is suffering from Liver cirrhosis and she is at a stage where doctors have suggested a transplant. With reference to your experience with Yeson in Shanghai, I would like to know how much was the cost of treatment and how much was your own expense for living & lodging. Also, how much time it took in total from sign-up till reaching Shanghai and finally getting back home.
Would it be possible for you to share contact details of the most relevant person there as well?
Many thanks in advance & best wishes for your husband & family!
Take care,
Badar Khushnood

Hello all. My mom is dying of liver and lung cancer. Surgery was not successful because there was too many tumours on the liver. We are in Canada. We never considered going out of the country. Noone ever suggested a transplant. Does anyone have an idea why?
I kinda feel we didn't fight hard enough. We just accepted it. |

@ MarriedBlnde:
my mom was diagnosed with Hepatocellular Carcinoma some 4 months back, after going through a lot, finally we came across a team of liver specialists from Singapore who recommended Transhepatic Arterial ChemoEmbolization (TACE) for her extra large tumor in the right lobe of the liver, which according to the studies of Doctors in the USA (and subsequently US qualified Doctors in Pakistan) was impossible to be TACEd due to its large size, not to mention resection/transplant were out of question. Nevertheless, i followed the lead to Singapore, took my mom there and had her TACEd and by the grace of God Almighty, she is feeling a lot better now as the Liver's enlargement (due to the tumor growing inside) has stopped considerably. However, unfortunately her cancer has spread over to the Lymph nodes for which the concerned Oncologist in Singapore has recommended a special regimen of Chemotherapy which we will be continuing in the near future as per the schedule within Pakistan. What i'm concerned about right now is that even though after a considerable amount of Cancer has been killed inside the liver (i saw the results of the PETScan which shows the tumor necrosis [dead cancer cells]) , surprisingly, her Alpha Feto Protein has not dropped and has continued to rise, before the first session of TACE it was 5300+, however after the first TACE it rose to 6600+, after that she underwent the second TACE owing to her good LFT and haemotology reports. I'll have another AFP test done next week (18 days after the second TACE) to see whether or not it has dropped so far... anyone got any idea why AFP goes so high?Any tips on assisting the AFP to drop? The Doctors in Singapore say that after an initial stage of elevation, it drops down.
Dear all,
For all those who are considering Liver Transplant for their loved ones, i would recommend the following hospital in Singapore, as I have personally witnessed the professionalism with which they work, and i personally had a chance to meet 3 patients and their live donors who had undergone Liver Transplant surgery and were up and around. Here's the webpage of the hospital which houses the Liver clinic:
http://www.gleneagles.com.sg/
and the clinic is:
http://www.kctanliverclinic.com.sg/
you can personally check out Dr. K C Tan's profile for further information. He is one of the world's most successful Liver Transplant specialists. Also, if anyone of you is willing to get in touch with the concerned team of Doctors, you may contact me on my email: sensati0n1@gmail.com
I pray that everyone gets the chance to reach the right place in the right time to get the right treatment.
Best of luck to everyone and I wish everyone a Happy and Healthy life.
Regards,
H.Q.

Dear Carol's Daughter,
Never despair, say a prayer..... Thats what I used to do when i first got the shocking news of my mother's cancer. Liver Cancer usually does spread out to the Lungs. Unfortunately, sometimes the Doctors in our respective areas are clueless about the advancements in medical sciences outside our countries.
I think your doctors have kept you in the dark just like the Doctors in my country did to me. If you are a fighter, i'm sure your mom will be a fighter, and its our obligation to do the best for our parents owing to how much they've sacrificed to bring us up. Please refer to my previous post on this page and if you need any further assistance, do get in touch with me.
I think her liver just MIGHT be transplantable, and the Lung cancer can be treated through chemotherapy. Give it one last shot and consult doctors at the hospital in the aforementioned post.
Regards,
A well wisher. |
