MY FATHER HAS NON HODGKINS LYMPHOMA AND BONE MARROW CANCER. HE IS 77 YEARS OLD. THE DOCTORS GAVE HIM 1 MONTH WITHOUT CHEMO AND 1 TO 2 YEARS WITH HOWEVER THEY WERE NOT SURE HE COULD SURVIVE THE CHEMO TREATMENT. HE ALSO HAS 90 PERCENT BLOCKAGE IN HIS RIGHT CAROTOID ARTERY THAT THEY ARE
NOT TREATING RIGHT NOW. HE WAS HAVING TROUBLE BREATHING WHEN HE ENTERED THE HOSPITAL-THE FOUND THE LYMPHOMA,BONE MARROW CANCER AND THE BLOCKED CAROTID ARTER. HE OPTED TO
TAKE CHEMO. HIS TREATMENTS ARE GOING WELL DURING THE CHEMO.
THE DAY AFTER OR SO--HIS MIND STARTS TO HALLUCINATE-SO BAD THAT HE DOESN'T KNOW WHO HE IS SOMETIMES-OTHER TIMES HE SEES THINGS THAT ARE NOT THERE AND STARTS TALKING AS IF HE HAS ALREADY DIED. AFTER ABOUT 2-3 DAYS OF THIS HE STARTS TO RETURN TO NORMAL. WE ARE WONDERING IF THIS IS A SIDE EFFECT OF THE CHEMOTHERAPY AND/OR IS THERE A WAY TO MINIMIZE THESE EFFECTS. HE IS VERY WEAK AFTER CHEMO-HAS TO USE A WALKER BUT GETS STRONGER DAY BY DAY AFTER CHEMO. UNFORTUNATELY JUST WHEN HE SEEEMS TO GET STRONGER IT IS TIME FOR CHEMO AGAIN., HE IS SCHEDULED FOR AT LEAST 2 MORE TREATMENTS-TREATMENTS ARE THREE DAYS LONG OF STRONG CHEMO--ANY INFO OUT THERE??

Ronald,

What your father probably had is called delirium. It is a reversible condition that frequently affects older and/or debilitated people. We see this all the time after almost any treatment. Just the fact of being in a different environment can cause this. But like you saw, it improved with time and trying to orient the person. Treatment for condition is essentially supportive. He is certainly at risk for having it again, so it's a good idea to let the doctors and nurses know that he has had delirium before.

regards,
Leo

Hello

Primary cancer of the bone marrow may be called a number of things. There is not just one cancer of the bone marrow. A few names: leukemia, polycythemia vera, myelofibrosis, essential thrombocythemia etc. The bone marrow may also be the site of metastasis from cancers arising elsewhere.

regards,
Leo
