Hello, my son is 3 1/2 years old, i first noticed he had a swollwn lymph node (pea sized)on the lt side of his neck (not painful) when he was 1 1/2. the pediatrician was not concerned, saying it is very common. however the node never went away and has grown (very slowly) in the last two years. I have also taken him to a family practice MD who suggested a course of antibiotics, this was the first time he has ever had antibiotics (has been pretty healthy) the nodes did not decrease in size still 15mm after the antibiotics, we just did a CBC and he came back anemic and a slightly low neutrophil count. Now trying to figure out the biopsy route, he will probably need sedation, we are in a fairly rural area, there is an ENT in town, can't stand the local radiologist, should I seek out a pathologist who has lymphoma experience, it sounds like the classification can be tricky if it is lymphoma, could a rural pathologist and lab easily diagnose lymphoma? Is a FNA as accurate as an excisional bx? Are CBC's ever normal with early lymphoma? We are in California (lake tahoe) trying not to panic any info very appreciated!

Hi Sawyers Mon,

I suspect that no one has answered your plea because nobody knows the answers to the specific question you have asked. I don't either, nor do I understand some of your abbreviations, but let me throw my 2 cents in anyway.

I was diagnosed by a GP at the local (rather small) hospital. Blood tests showed nothing unusual, and it wasn't until they gave me a CT-Scan that they suspected that I had lymphoma. In our area we have an oncologist that comes in once a week (from 60 miles away) and he first arranged for a biopsy and then (after confirmation) chemo.

Talk to your GP again and explain your concerns. I'm sure there are a lot more false reports than actual confirmations, but for your piece of mind recommend you do whatever it takes, even if it means traveling to a nearby city with better medical facilities.
