The following is a statement of Ritva Butrum, Ph.D., Senior Science Advisor to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR):

Spurred by a new scientific review that reveals how the study of diet in cancer survivorship has been woefully overlooked and underfunded, AICR is issuing an urgent call to the nation's cancer researchers and those who fund them.

We at AICR believe this paper, which appeared in the July 19 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, should serve as a wake-up call.

The JNCI review stated that because of the limited number and low quality of clinical trials on the subject, it is not yet possible to conclude that any dietary intervention has an effect on cancer survivorship.

Even though a relatively small number of trials were examined, the authors' task was daunting, because they collectively considered results involving very different populations, types of cancer, and changes to the diet.

Their conclusions will be considered by an international expert panel convened by AICR and its international affiliate, the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). The AICR/WCRF panel, which commissioned the JNCI review, will also consider evidence its authors did not take into account, such as the promising results of the Women's Nutrition Intervention Study, which is reporting an association between diets low in fat and lower risk of breast cancer recurrence.

On November 1, 2007, the AICR/WCRF expert panel will release the most comprehensive examination of the diet-cancer link ever undertaken, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: A Global Perspective.

That AICR/WCRF Expert Report will include a chapter on survivorship, and recommendations for cancer survivors about diet, supplements, physical activity and weight management.

In the meantime, we believe the best possible advice to offer cancer survivors is to adopt strategies that have been shown to reduce risk for first cancers: eat more plant foods and less red and processed meat, get regular physical activity, and watch your weight.

We call upon the research community to join us in supporting the study of cancer survivorship. The 24 million cancer survivors around the globe are demanding long-overdue answers to questions that require time, attention, and money. They do not deserve to be kept waiting any longer.

The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) is the cancer charity that fosters research on diet and cancer and educates the public about the results. It has contributed more than $78 million for innovative research conducted at universities, hospitals and research centers across the country. AICR also provides a wide range of educational programs to help millions of Americans learn to make dietary changes for lower cancer risk. Its award- winning New American Plate program is presented in brochures, seminars and on its website, http://www.aicr.org. AICR is a member of the World Cancer Research Fund International.
