Hi, a friend of mine was recently diagnosed with APL. He began treatment last week and was in the 6th day of a 10 treatment when he died suddenly. His lungs collapsed and he had other organ failure (kidney?) He seemed fine up until the 6th day. He was 47 and quite healthy, athletic,
fit. We are all stunned by this and quite confused as we have heard that aprox 90% achieve remission. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

I am the moderator for Cancer Forums. I split off your post from the thread it was in because your question, in my humble opinion, is significantly different and needs to be a thread all on its own.

I am sorry for your loss and for the death of your friend. Unfortunately, I know very little about the treatment of APL. Have you talked to your friend's family? What was the cause of death? My experience with Leukemia is that often it is not the leukemia itself that causes the person to die but an infection that overpowers the individual's already weak immune system. With any of the acute leukemia that can happen very fast... in a matter of hours sometimes. My father died of complications due to AML less than one month ago. He was older (83) and weaker than your friend but still seemingly healthy until the day before he died. At 5 am, Dad started to have a fever. By noon, he had died.

Bless you and your friend's family.
