sorry to hear what you and your mother are going through. My mom hasn't had surgery yet so I can't really help with your concerns but there is a site that someone here referred me to called cathy's ec cafe, I believe it is eccafe.org You can sign up for the forum there and the responses and info is more than you could ever hope for. Good Luck and Blessings to you and your mom.

Hi Sorry to hear about your mum going though such a tough time.
I don't know what sort of surgery your mum has had and how much of her insides have been 're-arranged'. However, 6 weeks is very early days in the recovery process and over the come 2-3 months she will start to feel a whole lot better.
In the meantime, your mum might be experiencing 'dumping syndrome'. This is fairly common following major surgery involving the stomach. Have a look at http://www.eccafe.org/ where there is some 1st hand advice on dumping. Also she should talk to her consultant and a dietitian. Dumping can be controlled with the right kind of diet - although it may take some time to establish what foods are good and those that are bad.
Best of luck to you all - as I say it's early days so keep strong and keep seeking advice until you are happy with the answers and progress. _________________ Jenny |

hi jenny
thanks for your reply, my mum had all her stomach removed, she went for her checkup yesterday and got the all clear, but i still dont know why she is getting so much pain, she car'nt sleep on her side anymore as she says she feels as if all her insides are dropping to one side. It must get better with time ,it has only been about 8 weeks.
regards

Hi Jill
If your mum has had all of her stomach removed then she will most definitely suffer from dumping syndrome. What she eats and they way she eats will be the difference between happy and miserable.
Rapid gastric emptying, or dumping syndrome, happens when the lower end of the small intestine (jejunum) fills too quickly with undigested food from the stomach. "Early" dumping begins during or right after a meal. Symptoms of early dumping include nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, and shortness of breath. "Late" dumping happens 1 to 3 hours after eating. Symptoms of late dumping include weakness, sweating, and dizziness. Many people have both types.
People who have dumping syndrome need to eat several small meals a day that are low in carbohydrates and should drink liquids between meals, not with them. People with severe cases take medicine to slow their digestion.
Have a look at this link for advice and suggestions. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/dumping-syndrome/DS00715/
In terms of her general recovery from surgery you are looking at 2 blocks of time the first is around 12 weeks when she will still be feeling pretty awful, tired, uncomfortable and sore. The second chunk is another 12 weeks as she slowly starts to feel better and her insides settle down so to speak. Your mum needs to take very gentle exercise. A walk to the end of the garden or the corner of the road, make sure she lifts nothing heavy even laundry or shopping will be too much for the 1st 3 months. Give her something to look forward to - plan something nice for Christmas and keep her enthusiastic and focused on it. By the beginning of the new year you can all have a fresh start and you mum will be feeling loads better.
Best of luck – please look at the links and try to sort out a good diet for your mum it will make things so much better.
