I just joined the forum tonight after having learned from my mother's doctor that he feels her CT/MRI scan revealed that she has a mass in her lungs, about 3.5 cm by 3.5 cm that he believes is lung cancer. He also said that her lymph nodes looked enlarged. He is arranging for her to have a biopsy but states that he feels there is nothing to be done.
My mother has a crappy HMO, Secure Horizons, and I want to take her to the best lung cancer specialist I can find in Southern California. I am a six year breast cancer survivor myself and had been treated at the USC Norris Cancer Hospital in Los Angeles. I will be calling some contacts I have there to see who is the best lung cancer specialist they have but I would appreciate any recommendations. My mom lives near San Diego so any lung cancer specialist in Southern California would be great. I am crying my eyes out as I write this. Even having had cancer myself has not prepared me for this.

My mom also has high liver counts, which may be due to her taking too much cholesteral medication, but I was wondering if it may also be related to lung cancer? The Dr. thought the scan also showed a shadow (a metastisis?) on her liver but he wasn't sure. She has had back and leg pain (the Dr. thought she might have spinal stenosis or syatica (sp?)) but she has not displayed any coughing, phlegm or shown signs of difficulty with breathing so a diagnosis of lung cancer came out of left field. She gave up smoking about 20 or more years ago.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I am in need of a specialist as well, If you would like we can do some research together. I also live in San Diego and am in greatly need of a lung cancer specialist

My uncle have mesothelioma cancer, unfortunately.. last few months we searched the Internet for articles about new approach in therapy, and found few good policlinics. http://www.mesotheliomacentar.com/
