Hello,

My dad had a total laryngectomy mid July. That is the removal of vocal chords and now he permanenty breathes through his neck. He is now a neck breather. A few days after the operation they discovered lung cancer in his right lung - inoperable. Talk about adding insult to injury. They gave him palliative radiation for 5 days after so that his lung could get more air as he had a partial lung collapse. He has developed a fistulla which is a common side effect after receiving radiation in the throat. He has been on feeds for two months now and has lost weight. We don-t kow how much time he has.
I am the primary caregiver and have had to fight for nursing care at home. There are also tensions between the siblings as brother, who has his own family is out of the picture and his hiding behind his family. I see the daily struggle that dad goes through. Good days and bad.
There is a lot of coughing up of mucus. It is clear white though not yellow. He had pneumonia twice in the hospital.
I am looking for someone to chat with and get support if you know of someone in a similar situation.
I am praying for a miracle. We are going in a few days to see if this fistualla (basically a hole between the wind and food pipe) has healed so that he can be introduced to some solids. THat would be a milestone.
Then.....we know there is no cure, but we dont know how far that mass has progressed. It was 4 cm in diameter. Now who knows. I just want the cancer to stop!

hi, this is my first time being on here. i actually found this site while trying to fing information about lung cancer. My dad has also had a total laryngectomy and now he is showing signs of lung cancer. Nothing has been determined yet, we are still waiting for tests to be done and results to come back. He coughs all the time, has headaches and earaches and his neck and face is so swelled. A ct scan showed that the lymph nodes on both sides of the neck were extremely swelled so they biopsied both sides, tomorrow we will get the results. he also has an appt for a ct scan of his head and chest on friday. i guess im trying to say i know how you are feeling, i wish things could just be normal.... good luck with everything, and you will be in my thoughts
