Hi, I'm new to the forum and would very much appreciate your help and advice. My mom was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer in August 2003. She first presented with a lump in the breast in the year 2000 and underwent a lumpectomy with axillary clearance. Histology was reported as an infiltrative ductal carcinoma. She was given radiation with no chemotherapy.

In March 2003, she had another lump but in the contralateral breast. It was reported as an infiltrative lobular carcinoma and radiotherapy was again given. On secondary review of this specimen, it was reported as a lymphoma.

A doctor in Singapore suggested that we should treat her with adjuvant chemotherapy even though there was no disease seen (clinically she was OK). She was given CHOP chemotherapy for six cycles ending in December 2003.

She was well until October 2005 when she was found to have a right perinephric mass. A biopsy was carried out and this again confirmed diffuse large cell lymphoma. She was given with R-CHAD chemotherapy for six cycles. At the end of treatment, repeat CT evaluation showed complete disappearance of disease.

The same doctor referred her at that time to see another doctor for an opinion of high dose chemotherapy stem cell rescue. My mom however declined high dose chemotherapy. She had a strong reaction to the second cycle of chemo and wasn't sure if she could handle another stronger dose.

She has been on regular follow-up since then. Recently she complained of some leg swelling associated with bruising. She couldn't even stand straight and walk on her own. Neurologic examination showed ataxia.

A CT Brain thorax and abdomen were carried out today. The CT brain shows multiple brain lesions consistent with metastatic involvement.

The doctor was confused. Lymphoma cancer doesn't commonly appear in the brain. He said this is the first time he's seen such a case and added that my mom's case had been very unusual since the beginning. (Everybody mistook it for breast cancer but decided later it wasn't) Does any of you know what we should do to her? Who or where to go to?

Thank you very, very much.

I'm afraid I won't be of much help to you, since my husband has a different type of NHL. However, I can tell you that I HAVE heard of lymphoma in the brain.

I'm not sure what treatment options are available over there. Is there any possibility that your Mom could come to the U.S.?

The doctor is suggesting radiation treatment. Do you know abt it? Is it dangerous or having side effects? He did mention we should probably ask for second opinions, that's why I'm posting in this forum. Probably someone had a similar case and knew what to do.

Suppose she could come to the U.S., where should she go to?

You should come to Baltimore, MD, Johns Hopkins Hospital, if you can come to the US. They are the best, extremely thorough and they have seen it all, I was recently transferred there myself because everyone kept telling me to go there and am very impressed. It is a dangerous area, a lot of crime, but the hospital is undoubtedly great. Best of luck to you and your mom, I'll keep you in my prayers as well.

Thank you very much for your reply and concern. She's just finished the radiation treatment in Singapore. We're hoping she'll be well after this. But I'll keep your advice in mind if anything happens in the future.

I wish you well too. =)
