I went to a clinic here in MN and they sent out a punch skin biopsy of a suspicious growth I had on my eyebrow to an outside company. Anyway, it has been two weeks since the biopsy. My doc who sent out the biopsy said that she "was not fond of the shiny appearance" after looking at it closely and suggested it MAY be basal cell. I called the office today and a nurse said that the biopsy came back last week and the PATHOLOGIST said he/she wanted a second opinion. They did not tell me a second opinion of what, just said that it does not mean it is cancerous nor that it is now. They said that the doc was out until this wednesday and it may take up to week to get back to me.

So this makes me worried. The only reason I could think of that a pathologist would want a second opinion is bad. Either they do not know what it is, or it is bad and since they are an outside firm, they need a second opinion from the doc.

Has anyone gone through this? Is it standard to get a second opinion on a skin biopsy?

The mole can be described as:

Located on my eyebrow not in the hair but 1/4 inch lower. It grew extremely quickly. Within a week it was 1/2 the size of an eraser in both diameter and circumference. It was itchy kind of scaly, whitish pink and crusty. After about 3 weeks I scratched it and some of it crusted off. It looked like it had little tubular structure to it. Then I took a nail clipper and cut it flat. It seemed to heal, but still a pink slightly raised itchy area remained when I went to see the derm for the punch biopsy.

Any opinions as to what is going on both with the biopsy and the growth would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much!
