A member of my family has breast cancer and had one recurrence already. This began 5-6 years ago. She tells me she's feeling very tired. She went and had a PET Scan. They could not find anything. Razz

Does this mean without a doubt, she does not have cancers elsewhere in her body? Educate me. Confused

Hello Justine,

I've had two PET scans. The last one was a month before I was diagnosed with metastasic disease [secondary breast cancer] on my lungs. The PET scan report did not specifically pin point the tumours. I'm not wanting to worry you but at least your friend's 'cancer' is not a whopping big tumour but perhaps [if they're there] small ones which don't show up clearly in a PET scan. Breast cancer research has come a long way quickly- my tumours have diminished in 9 months while I've been on Aromasin, an estrogen blocker.

All the best Justine

JustineHH,
PET scans are good for picking cancers ~1cm or larger. If she has small nodules, these may not be seen on a PET scan. Thus a PET scan is best used in combination with other imaging and the clinical picture. PET scan are not perfect, but can be helpful. Keep working with the doctors to determine her symptoms. Best wishes.
