Hello All,
I am a 22yo female and I do monthy SBE on myself regularly. About 3 weeks or so ago I found something resembling a lump, about the size of a pencil eraser below and to the left of my aereolar on my left breast. I am a bad patient, so I have been putting off going to the doctors. But a few days ago a found a second lump in close approximation to the first. I have also been quite lethargic lately, sleeping about 12 or so hours at night and then quite often taking an afternoon nap for 2-3 hours because I was so tired (and had done nothing to cause it). This is not normal for me, and I have also started exercising. When I exercise I usually dont need as much sleep because I dont feel as tired all the time. Oh, I also have an extensive family Hx of cancer, my dad=prostate, 1uncle= colon cancer, 1 uncle= brain cancer, 1 cousin=breast cancer, grandmother=leukemia, grandfather=prostate cancer.
I know there is a very good chance is could be cancer, especailly since my dad had prostate cancer (which could have been caused by a mutation in the BRCA 1& or 2 gene) and it could have been passed down to me which has been shown to cause breast cancer. I am going to try to make an appointment tomorrow but I wondering what you all think and if the lethargy could be part of it....
Thanks, _________________ Kat

Hi Kat,
I do not know if the lethargy is a sign of breast cancer. But regardless, YOU NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR ASAP!!! Lumps should not be ignored. Best case, it is not cancer but something else. Worse case, it is cancer that you have ignored for two months (by the time you see the doctor). Breast cancer is one of the only cancers that can be curable it caught early.
You are in my thoughts and prayers. _________________ Jim

| Lumps are nothing to ignore. Please see your doctor right away. As I look back I was tired before I knew that I had cancer, but fatique can be from a lot of things. The only way to know is to get checked, then you can deal with whatever it is. Good Luck. |

I do so agree with Jim and Julie - see your doctor quickly.
You have clearly had this on your mind. This kind of "fatigue" can be a masking action in which to hide away.
Keep us posted. |

Kat, waiting can be one of the hardest things to do! At least you have become a little more proactive about your own health! Stay proactive. Between now and the mammogram there is not much you can do, so read all that you can about breasts and breast abnormalities. Right now, no one can say what these "lumps" are. We all hope that the are not cancer. The good news is that breast cancers are treatable and you detected the lumps on a routine monthly self examination. So you caught the change early. You remain in my thoughts and prayers. _________________ Jim

For those of you, like me who have never had a mammogram, I found this great video. It explains what it is and shows you what the machine, films, and room looks like. After watching it I now know what to expect when I go in. Hope this may help some people as it took me forever to find. Soo.... I got a sonogram done today, because they did'nt think I needed a mammogram. The prelim report says that its normal breast tissue. So I guess there is an underlying reason for my fatigue. Thank you all for your support, and if the written report shows otherwise, I will update you. Thanks for everything, good luck all!!! _________________ Kat |

Hi,
I'm not trying to scare you, but make you aware. Mammograms and Sonograms aren't full proof. Both miss my 5.5 cm tumor. They are good tests and find many cancer at an early stage where the chances of it coming back are very good, but again, none are perfect. I'm a firm believer in lumps should be biposied. I had NO history of cancer in my family, I was the 1st and was only 43. Please don't ignore your gut and what you're feeling. Unfortunately, there are still doctors who say you're too young (no such thing) and if the test don't show an obvious mass, it's, come back in a year. That's what I was told. There's no cure for breast cancer, so please don't "assume" it's fine. _________________ Nancy

SORRY!!! I should have proof read my post. When it's caught early the chances of it NOT coming back a real good. _________________ Nancy
