|
|
I have Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (type of NHL)
The chemotherapy I will be getting is:
(hard to read Doctor's handwriting, some might be misspelled.)
Cytoxan
Adriamycie
Vincuistine
Presnison
The Doctor did not mention anything about becoming sterile. However, my research has shown chances of becoming permanently sterile. I'm 21 years old and would like to have kids some day. |

Hi, BJK,
Of the drugs I had only the Adriamycin ("the red stuff"). I was 26 when I was diagnosed and my doctor mentioned only that I should not have a baby within two years of treatment. I would ask her/him specifically in your case, but you have youth on your side (and perhaps your gender ).
Hope you are doing well.
Keep us posted on any developments and we'll do our best to field any questions you have.

BJK, did you mean "Vincristine" and "Prednisone"? I have taken both at sometime or another. Plus, I have take other chemotherapy agents... CCNU to be specific (which includes Vincristine). It was almost 15 years ago and I did become irreversibly sterile.
This is not to say that you will become sterile. I would suggest either talking with your pharmacist for instructions or to your medical team. Either of them should have specific instructions for you. It is not unusual or even illogical that you should not try to have a baby during chemo and for sometime after the end. After all, the egg (in a women) and sperm (in a man) are both very sensitive cells and can mutate and potentially cause birth defects. But ask your pharmacist or medical team for more specific details and instructions.
Good luck and God bless you with your chemotherapy! _________________ Jim

| Well I wasn't planning on having a child during chemotherapy. I just would hate to not ever being able to have children. I will be discussing this with the cancer center today to see if they suggest me going to a sperm barnk for a few weeks before chemo is started. |

| My doctors said that we didn't have any time to freeze any eggs before starting the chemo-therapy so they put me in a temporary menopause and said that my risks for getting sterile would be lower than 10%. And they said that I should wait 1-2 years before trying to get pregnant after the treatment is finished. |
