last week i had a mammogram and i got the report in the mail today, it says i need to contact my dr. for further evaluation and to have special views and /or ultrasound/or mri for an area of your breast(s) for further assessment. now i'm worried. it's been 10 years since my last mammogran, i know i should not have waited so long. i don't feel any lumps. i am 55 years old, my grandmother died from breast cancer. are there any signs i should look for?

Kathy, I can only imagine how worried you must feel having received that cryptic letter. I do not have any explanations. On top of that, having a family history of breast cancer is not a good sign. However, there is some good news... they mailed you the result. I suspect they would have phoned you it there was any urgency about your condition.

Look at the following link and give us any information you have:

http://cancerforums.net/viewtopic.php?t=626

It is fairly basic information that will help us answer your questions better.

Nancy (Muttsmon) will be better able to answer your question about signs you should be looking for. Again, I suspect that if you cannot feel a lump, other signs will either not exist or be so minor that you would ignore them under normal circumstances.

Have you scheduled an appointment with your doctor? If you have not, do that Monday morning. It might take a while for him/her to be able to see you. And then he/she may refer you to an oncologist and that will take another while. If you do not get right on to scheduling, you will just end up worrying longer. Maybe there is nothing to worry about.

I will be thinking about and praying for you.

P.S. How is your son doing, Kathy?

Hi Worriedmom,

It could be that they didn't get clear pictures and need more. If they see something on the mammogram and want to do an ultra sound, then I would insist that a biopsy be done on the area they see microcalifications or a lump. With you having a hx of BC in your family, you need to be very pro-active in getting mammograms and anything found removed. I could feel my lump and had no hx of Breast Cancer in my family, but my mammogram missed it and so did the ultra sound. The is NO test that can say if something is B9 or not, only a biopsy can do that. The tests are to show any abnormal findings. If it is a mass they see, it could be too small for you to feel if you're doing Self Breast Exams (which is how I found mine), which would be good news.

I felt great when I was dx and most ladies I've talked to did too. My lymph nodes weren't swollen, but I had 9 + for cancer, so for the most part, there are no symptoms.

Have the other films done. Again, I would insist on having a lump or cluster of microcalifications removed and not a needle biopsy, those aren't always accurate. The only good lump is one in a jar.

I had just turned 43, again with no hx in my family. From this day forward, do monthly self breast exams and get your annual mammograms.

Please let us know what you find out and please do NOT let the fear of having breast cancer, stop you from doing what you need to do. If it is, ignoring it won't make it go away, just more time to grown.
