Hi all,

My salivary glands were wrecked by radiaiton treatment for thyroid cancer. I take pilocarpine (Salagen is the brand name) to stimulate what is left of the glands, and it gives some relief from the constant dry mouth and subsequent problems that xerostomia engenders. I have heard that there is such a thing as an "Isotope Survey" that can determine if the glands can be restored, but the nearest place that does it, the Salivary Center in NYC, does not take my insurance and it is an expensive procedure.

Does anyone know of a place that does this, or works with salivary issues? It would be cheaper for me to fly to another city if I can find a place that takes my Oxford. Screwed up, huh?

Also, I'd be glad to talk with anyone who has had issues with their salivary glands. I'm a true veteran at this point.

Regards to all,
Richard Day Gore

I work with head and neck cancer patients, including all the people who have a dry mouth (xerostomia) afterwards, but I have never heard of the procedure you mention. It seems somewhat strange, but I am very curious to hear what you find out.

Richard, I am very sorry to hear about your dry mouth. That certainly must make life, well, not to comfortable for you. Keep working with your medical team. Maybe they can help you locate another source for the treatment you are looking for. Keep us informed.
