Father recently diagnosed with NSCLC Stage IIIB.

Started first round of chemo on 12/11. Returned for Neulasta shot on 12/12.

In and out in 5 min.

At no point during this visit were we told anything about the side effects of Neulasta, including the potential threats, problems, etc..

NOTHING.

Looking further into exactly what is being put into my Father's body, I discovered the following on the manufacturers website:

1. NeulastaŽ should not be administered in the period between 14 days before and 24 hours after administration of cytotoxic chemotherapy (see DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION) because of the potential for an increase in sensitivity of rapidly dividing myeloid cells to cytotoxic chemotherapy.

2. Patients should be informed of the possible side effects of NeulastaŽ and be instructed to report them to the prescribing physician. Patients should be informed of the signs and symptoms of allergic drug reactions and be advised of appropriate actions. Patients should be counseled on the importance of compliance with their NeulastaŽ treatment, including regular monitoring of blood counts.

3. SPLENIC RUPTURE, INCLUDING FATAL CASES, HAS BEEN REPORTED FOLLOWING THE ADMINISTRATION OF NEULASTAŽ AND ITS PARENT COMPOUND, FILGRASTIM. PATIENTS RECEIVING NEULASTAŽ WHO REPORT LEFT UPPER ABDOMINAL AND/OR SHOULDER TIP PAIN SHOULD BE EVALUATED FOR AN ENLARGED SPLEEN OR SPLENIC RUPTURE.

We were told NONE of this. Obviously, finding a new treatment center is at the top of the priority list, but I remain enraged over this dangerous oversight.

Any recommendations as to how to proceed?

If nothing else, I want to deal such a tremendous blow to them that this never happens again to those who follow us.

Any ideas would be graciously appreciated.

Thanks.

Please rembember doctors are human too.

Being aggressive and stating "If nothing else, I want to deal such a tremendous blow to them that this never happens again to those who follow us." will not help your father, just add to a stressful time already.

It might be the more polite and prudent thing to advise the doctor of their oversight rather than ram it down their throat. You want them to have empathy for your situation, not to be the enemy and certainly not think twice about the next patient coming to see them.
