Hi everybody!

My mother, 70 yrs. old, nonsmoker all her life who lives in Germany was diagnosed with stage 4 NSCLC and bone metastases in May 2007. She had a first round of chemo combined with Avastin in Summer 2007. A PET and CT scan showed in December that the main tumor in her lung and the others did not grow, some even got smaller. Liver and brain is clear. Also did another CT in January with the result: No additional tumors, situation is "stable". Since a few days she has an significant loss of appetite combined with regular vomiting and nausea. Can this be a long term side effect of the chemo? She tolerated the chemo well while receiving it. She has gotten much more weaker, but the docs are telling us that the tumor situation is stable.

Any explanation for this?
And can anyone recommend a good anti-nausea and anti-vomiting medication? She is getting weaker pretty fast right now.

All answers are higly appreciated!

Hi and sorry to hear that your Mom is fighting this disease.

Please contact the doctor about her sudden vomiting, if you haven't already.

There are several products to reduce nausea. Finding the right one that works is sometimes tricky. There is the usual compazine, but others are Zofran and Kytril. I know there is more, but we didn't have much nausea experience.

I know that my husband felt full often and eventually wasn't eating huge portions, but never was nauseated. I don't think there is a chemo-delay on nausea, so it has to be from something else. Unfortunately, with this disease, there aren't always easy answers.

Here are some links to a site that is hosted by a lung cancer oncology specialist that talk about nausea:

Some of these may apply, others might not. Go to the Onctalk.com site and do a search in the box on the side. You might come across the answers you are seeking.

Best wishes for some relief.
