My Husband was just diagnosed with Head and neck cancer, He had a surgical biopsy done this past week. Its in the lymph node going up through his face blocking his nasal pasage and ear all on right side. The surgon said its a stage 4. We have a few days before He goes back to the Doctors. What do we have ahead of us, The Dr. told me surgery would be a redical one and cemo, and radiation will be done. We have no ideal at this point whats comming. Crying or Very sad He started out with swollen lymph node on right side of neck, kept getting sinus infections ear aches and dental problems, He's one of those men who never goes to Dr. He enden up in er, for a what they said was an infection in his body, they put him on Iv antibiotics there, things seemed to settle down. and the lymph node went down alittle. then about two months ago he started loosing his hearing, and couldn't breath out of the right side of nose, he said he had a bad taste and smell, He works at a factory where they grind brass products,we had been thinking it was due to the brass dust. He finally went to a ent Dr. and had needle biopsy, cat scan, chest exray, the needle biopsy came back inconclusive, so they did surgical biopsy. He had his upper teeth removed, and alot of things done because dr's and us were thinking along the line of infection. we are both devistated, he is at the point now he has lost alot of weight, has had constant headache, for the past 3 weeks, does not want to eat cant taste anything, and says he has so much pressure in his face and head, the dr. said cancer has not spread to his brain yet but if he doesn't start treaments soon it will.I am lost I am scared, and i can only imagine what is going through his mind. thanks for allowing me to vent.

mimixtwo, I am very sorry about your husbands cancer. What kind of cancer is it? Is it a lymphoma or a cancer that has metastasised to the lymph nodes? That makes a significant differences in what treatments are available to him and his prognosis.

You and your husband are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for this site has been helpfull, I'm not sure exactly what kind it is yet he goes back to Dr. wed.It was ent. Dr. that found it. He did tell me that its in the lymph node, muscle, and tissue and blocking dranage from nose and ear, thats why he cant hear or breath out of right side, and it has not gone to his brain. He tells me there is so much pressure in his face and has had constant headache. The Dr. also said if they do surgery it will be a radical one( what does that meen)? we know so little right now.

Keep us informed, mimixtwo. It does sound like a very advanced and aggressive cancer.

The word "radical" usually means removal of the whole organ. For an example a radical prostatectomy means removal of all of the prostate and sometimes some of the surrounding tissue. It means an extensive cancer removal surgery. Since your father has an aggressive cancer, it really does need to be treated very aggressively.

I am not sure if your husband is at a major medical center or at a smaller, regional hospital. However, I would suggest that he get the best surgical team available to him for this surgery... even if that means traveling to find one.

Always in my thought and prayers, mimixtwo Smile. I know how anxious you must be feeling because I have been there more than once in my own life. I struggle with God too. But I think God is strong enough to handle our frustrations, anger, doubts....

My husband went back to the Dr. this afternoon, we were told it starts at the back of the throat, and goes upward, pretty much taking up the intire soft pallet, all the way to the base of his scull, and the lymph nodes. Its very agressive, this Dr. does not want to do the surgery here localy, because of the size of the tumor. and want him to go to ohio state unv. for a second aponion, and possible surgery there, He said if they can remove it because of the size of it, they pretty much will have to split the front of his face to get to it, and don't know if they can get it all. He will also have to take chemo, and radiation. they are calling tomarrow to set everything up for us, Wow, not two months ago we were thinking if was a bad infection from haveing his upper teeth pulled. Man was we wrong, He had no other symtoms befor the teeth, and slight hearing loss that progressivly got worse. One thing to everyone out there who smokes, Please Stop, that is what caused his cancer. Thank you
