Hi, I use a port for my chemotherapy. The day after my 4th session (on 4/25/0Cool, I developed a red inflammation along the catheter. Apparently, I had a blood clot where the catheter enters the vein; this created a back pressure which forced the chemicals to go into my body (subcutaneous) tissues alongside the catheter. The red inflammation was due to extravasation action by the Adriamycin on my body tissues.

My oncologist informed me that there wasn’t much that could be done about the extravasation other than regular use of cold compressions and prescribing a pain killer (vicodin) as well as an antibiotic (Augmentin 500mg) to prevent/contain any possible infections. He said that there will most likely be permanent scarring in the extravasation area. As of today (5/8/0Cool, the red inflammation has now turned to dark hardened skin covering an area approximately 6 inches in diameter between my right shoulder and my right breast.

I find it difficult to believe that not much can be done to deal with the extravasation and it’s effects i.e. permanent scarring. Is there anyone out there who can share their experiences with managing/treating extravasation caused by adriamycin?

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Thanks
