My stepmother has liver cancer and has been undergoing chemo for about 6 weeks. It is not taking well and now she is on oxygen and they put her in the hospital bc she is so weak. Her stomach is severely extended and feet swollen. Thankfully she is eating well.

While I don't want to give up hope, I fear the end may be near (she beat esophageal cancer last year) and she also has spots on her lungs.

I live out of town and I'm not sure what to do or when to go... I have a trip planned in a couple weeks, but will that be too late?

Thanks for any guidance you can provide

Metastatic tumors in the Liver can or do affect Liver function. Depending on the degree in which Liver function is impaired, your stepmother could go very quickly into a coma-like state. Keep a bag packet; keep in close contact with family members that are with her. Ask them how long she is sleeping. If they tell you that she is sleeping more and more, get to her as soon as possible.

However, right now what you really should be focused on is attending to the needs of your husband and family. When my father-in-law was sick and eventually died of cancer, I wanted more than anything to be with him. I truly loved him more than I loved my wife Embarassed. My father lived in Brazil so my father-in-law was very much like a father to me. However, we had three children... all in school. So I had to care for them while my wife went to be with her father.

I am not sure what your situation is like, but I assume that the need of your husband to be with his mother takes precedence. It was very hard for me to hear my wife tell me to stay home but it was the right thing to do in our case.
