Hello. My name is Mary and I am a 36 year old woman who feels like I may be going crazy. I have an appointment on 10/20 with an Oncologist/Hematologist, but I am afraid of what he may or may-not say.
I started having problems about 6 years ago and have yet to get any answers. It began suddenly when I had a mini stroke, blood tests showed I had a low platelet count ( in the 50's) and I had some bruising and the red spots on my skin. However, all the other tests were fine and the platelets eventually returned to low normal. At that time my Doctor said the only way to know for sure was a bone marrow biopsy, but decided that it wasn't needed when my count went up. I should tell you now that my mother and 2 of her brothers have Lupus, so that was the first thought of everyone. Over the last several years I have just not seemed right. I am so tired all the time, I have continued to have the patikea and then about 1 1/2 years ago my lymph nodes began to swell. They started under my arms, but could be felt around my collarbone also. The doctors test for everything with blood work, Mono, rocky mountain, another lupus panel... there was nothing except the signs of this mystery infection. I did long term antibiotics, no change. So last December my doctor sent me to have lymph nodes removed, he said what he was seeing mad him think Lymphoma, they removed 4 from under my arm. The tests came back as cancer free, however they said that there was a lot of some type of granules ( I don't remember the name) that indicated that I was fighting an infection. More antibiotics. Now a year later they are still swollen and I now have them in my abdomen, and down my upper arm. What got me to your site was my search for sore lymph nodes. I had noticed that I was having painful and red lymph nodes(1 or 2) a lot on the weekend, but they are not always the same ones. After reading some of your posts I realized that I almost always have drinks on Friday night- I teach 8th grade and coach girls basketball, as well as having a 16 year old son and 13 and 8 year old daughters, so I really need a couple of drinks by Friday (ha). I also have recently developed a weird rash, it looks like poison ivy without the blisters, but it itches.
I guess what I really need to know is am I crazy or does this sound familiar to anyone. I cant take much more. I am so afraid that they are missing something and that I am slowly fading away.
Thank you for any input you may have,
Mary |

hello Mary
First off Don't panic. Even if it is a blood cancer they can be treated, the ever swelling ranks of survivors proves this. You have done the right thing by getting your appointment and there is little more that you can do now until you have seen your doctor. Please try and relax a bit and stay away from internet medical sites until you have had all your tests and you have a definite diagnosis, this may help ease your stress. I hope all goes well and if you feel the need come back at any time. _________________ Age 52
