My husband's psa started rising 2 years ago, going from 1.7 to 2.9. A biopsy was recommended, but he was reluctant due to possible complications so chose to monitor instead. For 2 years he stayed around 2.4. This year it went up to 4.7, and a repeat test was 3.8. So reluctantly he underwent the biopsy a week ago. Yesterday we got the good news that no cancer was found in the 12 biopsies, however 4 days after the biopsy he started having burning and urgency to urinate. He was put back on antibiotics, and when he saw the doctor a bladder ultrasound was performed, and found to be normal. He was also given an antibiotic shot, and told to return today. His symptoms were not any better, so he was given another of the same shot, plus a different shot, new antibiotic pills, and another prescription for the burning. He was told to call back tomorrow, and if it isn't better he will be put in the hospital for IV antibiotics. His urine culture from yesterday came back normal today. His doctor said he had done all he could do. But if the urine culture is normal, what kind of infection are we looking at? I am very concerned, and it appears as if his worst fears have happened and he is falling in that 1% that have complications from biopsy. Any insight would be really appreciated. Also, he had absolutely no symptoms before the biopsy, and had a normal DRE and ultrasound. What might have raised his PSA in the first place?

Good to hear about your biopsy results, but not the problems with burning and urgency to urinate.
I hope you will find the problem and get it solved quickly.
When you do find the culprit, bug, bacteria, or whatever it is, please let us know what it was. Sure hate it when you're in the 1% category for complications.

Since they see nothing in the urine culture, I guess its in the prostate itself. Some form of biopsy induced prostatitis or infection. I mean, giving how the procedure is done, it doesn't take a genius to figure out how bacteria could get introduced.
Did you read SelfPreserve's account in the "A Remarkable Reduction in PSA by Natural Means" thread?
Rather scary account of his biopsy related infection, but every case is different. BTW, did they give him antibiotics prior to the biopsy. I know sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

About the results that induced the biopsy in the first place, the
1.7 to 2.9........to 2.4, 2.4.........then to 4.7 and 3.8.....
I was wondering during these 2 or so years if they ever treated him for prostatitis, either bacterial or non-bacterial to possibly bring down the PSA results? BTW, not all prostatitis has symptoms, yet can still produce higher than normal test results.
You didn't include his age, so I'm not sure what would be normal although if those accelerations were true numbers then I guess a biopsy was appropriate.

Good luck on getting rid of this current trouble quickly.
