My Mom went through a tough bout of pnemonia after her first Chemo of Taxol and Carboplatin, she was in the hospital 5 days. They skipped a week for her to gain strenght and this past week she went back for her Chemo and she is now only recieving Taxol.
What does this mean?
They say they will do it three weeks in a row then she will have a week off and see the doctor....then if all is going okay they will repeat this.
We just are not sure what this is doing for her and what I should be looking for as she goes through this. any insight, suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated........also Hospice..............when have some of you had Hopsice become involved,,,,,,,any info would be great thank you!!! |

Hi Trudy,
Do you go to appts. with your Mom? I go with my parents. If you do go with her, you should ask about the discontinuation of the Carboplatin.
Hospice is not called in until no more can be done. My dad has palliative care because his cancer is advanced and he has pain with it. We have a great palliative care team!

Hi Kristi,
Thank you SO much for your reply. You have so much on your plate with both of your parents being sick, it was so kind of you to repsond to my post. I think of you daily and pray for you as you walk through this.
Although I do go with my mom to her appointments, does not want me to ask the doctors any questions, she said she just wants to do whatever the doctors say to do....and then it is very little information.
There has been no rapport built with her doctors.
It is an in and out sort of thing...
honestly it frustrates me terribly...but this is what she wants...
It's been tough not having the freedom to know and understand more of her condition, yet I am trying my best to honor her requests.
My mother lives with my husband and me...so I have him to help me too...
I am so glad for this forum and to be able to read what others walk through, it has been a tremendous help to me, I read it every day.
I thank you again Kristi for your help and response.
Continue to take care of you.
I did find out that there are some Hospice organizations who can help even while on Chemotherapy....
I am in South Central Penna. and they said they can help with out jeopardizing anyof Mom's treatment...however, my struggle is she won't ask for the help yet...
so we wait..and live a day at a time.
Maybe there is a Hospice who can help you, go online and check out your county's Hospice services.
Many Blessings to you Kristi.

Hi Trudy,
Sorry to hear that your Mom is having issues with the Carboplatin. Have you visited Dr. West's site at CancerGRACE.org to ask about this new regimen. That is a place you can safely ask all the questions you want to know and get a professional oncologist's opinion, without alarming your Mom.
I think a lot of the change is how the patient reacts to the chemo and age can play into it. Giving her less dosages, once per week for three weeks and one week off usually amounts to a little bit more chemo than the once per three week blast. Of course, that doesn't include the elimination of the Carboplatin. I'd be interested to see what Dr. West says about this protocol.
You remain in my thoughts and prayers -- as does everyone on this board. It's such a crummy fight with so many unknowns.
Many hugs,

Hi Trudy,
My Dad is very stubborn in many ways. He hates when I ask questions but he has come to understand that there are things that I must ask. And there are things that I must tell the oncologist. My Mom does not want to know her staging.. She just wants to fight the cancer.
We have palliative care for Dad. I can't say enough about it. It's such a great thing! I am trying to talk my dad into getting a bath aide because of his shortness of breath issues. He has a shower bench but I feel that a bath aide would help him to conserve some of his oxygen. He gets really short of breath at times.
