My father is 72 yrs, old and was diagnosed with NSCLC in spring of 05. He had his upper right lobe removed in July. We thought we had it in time and the surgery seemed to be very successful. The lymph nodes were clean. Then around Nov. 05 he started complaining about his upper leg/thigh area hurting and he felt a knot. As it turned out it was a tumor that had developed in the lymph node area. He had the tumor surgically removed in Jan. 06. The doctors told us that it was very rare for it to spread to that area. He is now waiting for chemo and radiation and his spirits are very upbeat. I guess what my question is to see if anyone has ever heard of this type of spreading location and if changes his prognosis because he had it surgically removed? And also how long does he have? This has been a very up and down year for our family and has shed light on a lot of things that have been taken for granted. Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Drifter,
Im sorry your dad has had a recurrence. My Dad was diagnosed in Jan with NSCLC 3b and my mom this month with the same, but hers is large cell and much more aggressive. They are both mid 70's. She was sick in January when my dad was diagnosed but a few weeks later she had what looked like boils come up on her clavicle and her abdomen. She had one of the abdominal knots surgically removed and biopsied and found that it was lung cancer. They gave her 6 months. Since then she has gotten more of the knots. I guess they are traveling through her system. She does have them now in her hip area. Some of these knots are very large and she had some radiation to try and shrink them. She doesnt have very many good days and hospice has given her liquid morphene in case she needs it. I hope you are able to cope and I hope you have a good support system as thats all that sustains me.
