Stage IIIA lung cancer, age 64 smoker, male, other health very Good,
3 cm mass found in middle lobe right lung, removed 5 weeks ago & cancer then found in 2 of 7 glands removed from center of chest. Operation performed at very respected facility 500 miles from home. They recommended Cisplatin at 4 week intervals, repeat 4 times to be performed 1 hour from my home town.

Oncology doctor 1 hr away, also well respected, recommended CarboPlatin instead. Said CisPlatin not used much in US anymore because results about the same as Carbo, which had much less severe side effects.

I'd accept worse side effectes to use whichever is more effective. I start this Monday, 4/24. Anyone have comparative info?

Thanks

My Dad's oncologist wouldn't give Cisplatin, but did give Carboplatin.

Bwalker,

replied to your question under my topic but thought I would add abit here. I guess to give some credence to the combo of etoposide/cisplatin, my mother had been seen by the cheif oncologist at UC San Francisco, and by his suggestion, her local oncologist (the two of them regularly corroborate) began with the two drugs in question. It does seem strange that the dr you saw mentioned no one using cisplatin anymore. Hope this helps.

Michael

My Dad's Oncologist is head of Oncology as well, and doesn't recommend cisplatin.
