My 14 year old is having a excisional biopsy on Tuesday. I'm wondering if there is anything I should ask for. Any type of testing, any test that may not be routine that I should ask them to do? Any one else have a submandibular removed?? Can you tell us what to expect?

Quick list of testing already done:
*ct scan, shows multiple enlarged nodes, especially in posterior cervical chain.

*lab work all normal - cbc, autoimmune, sed rate, inflamatory.
her MCH was just a point low.

* Allergy testing- cats and weeds and trees. No symptoms of allergies like runny nose or sneezing.

* infectious disease - found nothing

*Epstien Barr - shows antibodies, no known mono history.

Her Symptoms: large node in neck (submandibular) right side has been hurting for a few years, left side about a year, back of neck a few months. She describes the pain as "shooting". The right side of neck is about 2.3 cm. The CT scan shows several about 1.8 to 2.3cm.

Any suggestions would be helpful. I'm not convinced it is Lymphoma, that is why I'm asking if there are other tests we should ask for?

Anyone see Dr. Anita Newman (ENT) at Cedar Siani in Beverly Hills?
Thanks again for any input...
Shannon

Sounds like you got most of the bases covered, yet I'm no expert (only a patient)

Hopefully someone else better qualified will jump in.

In any event, I send you and your daughter love and strength.

Well, I have Hodgkin's Lymphoma and I also had enlarged nodes on both
sides of the neck but they didn't want to operate there(?) so they removed
a less enlarged one from my armpit, which tested negative. Later they
did bone a marrow biopsy on my hip (pain!!) which tested positive. And
probably the least accurate is the needle biopsy. The thing is the lymph
node may be inflamed but still test negative for cancer. There are a lot
of things that can cause inflamation besides lymphoma.
I wish tthe best for your daughter as we all do on this forum. Our prayers
are with you.

Hi, im a 16 year old who was recently diagnosed with lymphoma except mine was in my chest and under my arm and i had really bad pains for a year that felt like a shooting like your daughter described. i hope that everything will be okay with your daughter. all those tests you mentioned were the same ones i had too and i also had a gallium test but i dont know if you would need that. i also had two biopsy's done near my lung and it however did not determine that i had lymphoma i dont know if this would be the same case with your daughter or not but my doctor told me the reason why it didnt work was becasue the cancer cells bounce off the needle so if it is lypmoma it might not work but i really dont know thats just what my doctor told me. i had to get surgery to determine that i had lympoma. im no expert im just a new paitient at this but i know how you guys must feel and i wish the best for you and your daughter and hopefully you will soon know. Dont worry though when you go they will explain everything to you and you could ask your doctor. im sorry i couldnt really answer your question but my prayers are with you. best of luck.

My daughter (Alexia) had her biopsy today. They were going to do a frozen section, but the pathologist told the surgeon he didn't want to. Not sure why. (any ideas? ) Now we have to wait....
Thanks for all your encouraging words. I appreciate your time to answer my questions. They did tell me today that they are sending it out in several pieces to check for several things.
Thanks again - Shannon
