Hello, I was browsing the internet for information and happened onto this site. This seems like a great place to get others experience and insight. My dad was diagnosed with primary liver cancer in nov. 2005. He has had a chemoembolization procedure, which was excrutiating for him, but has been doing well up until the past few weeks. The dr. just called and told him his ammonia level was extremely high and started him on a med called lactulose, he also has the dependent edema in both legs. Just wondering if any one else has had similar problems and how the outcome was. I guess my question is would this be a sign of worse things to come and what to expect.

Oh, your father's situation sounds exactly like my father's. He battles with his ammonia level constantly and if he doesn't go to the bathroom daily (which is how the toxin is removed) then he has problems.

My Dad has had Hep C for 6 years now and liver cancer for almost a year and a half. He has beat all expectancies given to him, but it has been a miserable road.

Hubby was diagnosed w/ liver cancer Feb 21, ammonia levels have gone thru the roof 2x-1st it hit 112, 2nd time hit 173. As long as he takes the lactulose, has no problem. Only side effect is time spent in bathroom. BUT much better than the brain fog he goes into without taking the med.
